We are proud to announce that we’re partnering with the Post & Courier Columbia to present select plays from Women+ On The Edge of Democracy, a groundbreaking initiative encouraging conversation about American democracy initiated by the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts in Vermont and The Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Our presentations will be on Thursday, October 29th at 7:30PM and Sunday, November 1st at 2:30PM on the Thigpen MainStage, featuring a number of Trustus company members and frequent artist collaborators. Each presentation will include a discussion moderated by members of the Post & Courier newsroom.

The Flynn created this groundbreaking cultural and civic initiative which commissioned 36 prominent women+ playwrights from around the world to write ten-minute plays or monologues in response to these urgent questions: What is the current state of democracy in America? What can history, global context, or futurism offer us in this pivotal moment?

The Kit Kat Club may be a place to escape the world… but the world doesn’t stop at the door. Cabaret reminds us what can happen when hatred grows, people are targeted, and the warning signs are ignored.

“‘It was the end of the world, and I was dancing with Sally Bowles and we were both fast asleep.’

That is the closing dialogue spoken by Cliff (Olan Domer), a disillusioned young would-be writer and the protagonist of Cabaret. Now fully 60 years old, Joe Masteroff’s script and the music and lyrics of John Kander and Fred Ebb are still relevant, and have been given an ominously timely update by director and choreographer Terrance Henderson.”

Life is beautiful here, old chums, but don’t just take our word for it — the reviews are in! Take a look at what our friends over at The Free Times had to say, and then come hear the music play on the Thigpen Mainstage yourselves! Cabaret is still running until October 25th, and space for the rest of this weekend is EXTREMELY limited. Come take your seat before it’s too late: your table is waiting!
