North Village Arts District Friends, Can You Help CoMo to Go Renewable?
I’m writing today because we have the opportunity to move our city in a greener, more sustainable direction, something that will benefit all of us. We would love it if your business could lend a hand by endorsing this effort.
Peaceworks and our allies in Sierra Club, the League of Women Voters, Amnesty International, and several other groups are working to press forward the shift to clean, renewable energy, and, in particular, working to get Columbia Water and Light to source 100% of their power from renewable sources by 2030.
Siemens, the engineering consultant the City hired has studied this, and they concluded that 100 by 2030 is doable. Their report lays out three scenarios, doing this by 2030, by 2040 or by 2050. We believe that we’ve kicked the can down the road for far too long already, and the right thing is to adopt a plan to reach 100% by 2030. This is also the only feasible way to achieve the 50% reduction in overall greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has indicated is necessary to avoid the worst case impacts of climate change.
Adopting the 2030 goal not only reduces our emissions, but also allows CoMo to be an example to others around Missouri and beyond. It also makes us a more attractive place for people to live and for firms to do business. It will be a feather in our hats that businesses can use to attract customers, being able to claim that their operation runs entirely on renewable energy. The mantle of leadership is, of course, not the primary reason for doing this, but it really is an additional benefit.
In order to demonstrate to our City Council broad support for setting the goal of 100 by 2030, we are asking businesses and organizations to sign on as endorsers. I am attaching a one page endorsement form and a two page background paper that expounds on this.
If you’d like to sign on, as a supporter, on behalf of your business, you just need to print out and sign the form. You can drop it off at the Peace Nook (noon-6 daily) or give me a call at 573-875-0539 and I’ll be happy to stop by and pick it up. If you have any questions or need more info, please let me know and I’d be happy to get back with you.
Thanks and all the best,
