The Columbia Civic Orchestra would like to send condolences to the Geenen and Heglund family. A week ago today they lost a beloved family member, father, grandfather, husband, and friend to all he embraced in his lifelong journey, and CCO Board Member - Reverend Gene Heglund. We have set up a memory fund in his honor on the CCO website.

Composer Fred Onovwerosuoke will be in residency this week from Feb. 24 through Feb. 27!! The St. Louis-based, African-born composer’s visit will begin with a convocation presentation –“Cultural Programming Re-Imagined”– from 3 to 4 pm on February 24 at Whitmore Recital Hall. This is a free event.

    Events Outline:
Friday, February 25 at 3pm: seminar for composition students.

Saturday, February 26 at 7:30pm: the Columbia Civic Orchestra will play his work, Warriors Dance, at the Missouri Theatre.

Sunday, February 27 at 7:30pm: the Mizzou New Music Ensemble will present a free concert that will include a performance of Onovwerosuoke’s Nubian Dances No. 1 at Sheryl Crow Hall in the Sinquefield Music Center.

Born in Ghana to Nigerian parents, Onovwerosuoke grew up in both countries before settling in the United States. “FredO,” as friends call him, has spent time in over thirty African countries researching and analyzing some of Africa’s rich musical traditions. In 1990, he attended Principia College in Elsah, Illinois on a full scholarship, then made nearby St. Louis his home.

Calling all Community Music Ensemble Members

If you are an adult amateur musician whose primary form of music involvement is participating in a small or large nonprofit band, orchestra, and/or choral ensemble—not affiliated or under the auspices of a college, university, or religious association, then you are eligible to participate in my research project exploring how participating in a community ensemble impacts well-being. (Not if you are enrolled in a secondary or higher education music ensemble, studying music privately, receiving a primary income related to the field of music through performance or pedagogy or are retired from the field of music – sorry). This research, titled “An Exploration of Adults’ Perceptions of Community Ensemble Participation on Well-Being,” could potentially be used to strengthen music advocacy efforts, assist in the recruitment and justification for music in schools and communities, as well as promote more meaningful learning opportunities and experiences for ensemble participants.

Participation will involve completing a brief 10-15-minute survey, comprising questions on well-being in general, open-ended responses, and demographics. Participation in this research is voluntary and anonymous. The results of the project may be published but with no information about identities of participants or their ensembles. If you would like to participate in the research project, please click on the link found HERE (https://missouri.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_7VehTJW5PfdBIGO). The survey link will be available to complete at your earliest convenience from January 10, 2022 to January 31, 2022.

If you have any questions concerning the research project, please contact me at [email protected]. If you know of other community ensembles or members of community ensembles who might be interested in participating, please feel free to share my contact information and this post. If you are a leader of a community ensemble, please private message me for more information. Thank you for your assistance!

    Sincerely,

    Leah K. Gumbel

“We are open to having anyone who wants to give music a try,” says Stefan Freund, the music director of Columbia Civic Orchestra. “We have doctors, lawyers, accountants, students, professors — a body that really is reflective of the Columbia community.”
Hear why Stephen Freund, director of the Columbia Civic Orchestra, finds working with students to be so rewarding.

The origins of the Columbia Civic Orchestra have become mythological. CCO is a group where professionals and amateurs play together for free and for their own enjoyment. The musicians of this orchestra have various backgrounds, and Vox is giving you an opportunity to get to know them.
While we're sad to have to postpone our 2020 Missouri Composers Project (MOCOP) concert, we're working on rescheduling it for the Fall. The Salvation Army Columbia, MO is looking for more bell ringers, and thanks to a new website, it's easier now than ever before to become one!
