Hello friends of Dogwood! Tonight, Friday, July 22, for our very very last show: the First and Last Annual Dogwood Fest featuring Dogwood's very own Sissy Paycheck, Haii Usagi (they're baaaack!), Dank Fizzer, and Static Paisley! Doors at 6:30, music at 7. Come rock!

In the gallery, Kristin Smart has transforming the space once again (she did the incredible retro makeover of the big studio! and the sign!) featuring amazing homemade instruments by Monte Nevins.

We'll have some random art supplies to give away. We are out totally at the end of the month, so come now or never!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has been a part of Dogwood either in a studio or having a show or coming to art shows, concerts, installations, tea ceremonies, fashion shows, film premieres, and more!

Join us for our final First Friday July 1, 6-9pm.

First Friday lineup: Short films from Sasha Goodnow and Generic Moving Images at the top of the hour, every hour. DJ set from DJ Sunspots throughout the evening! Come dance with us!

Introducing Dogwood First Friday June Artist, Jen Bradford!
A lifelong artist and craftsperson with a storied background in metalsmithing and fabrics, Bradford took to mixed media during the pandemic while searching for a new creative pursuit. "I find this way of working to be much more similar to the sculptural work of metalsmithing than to more painterly techniques. I still love working in fibers, as well, and have felt the allure of silver, gold and gemstones calling me back in that direction, as well." Though the work has a thematic feel, Bradford says, "I never really set out on an artistic journey with a particular destination in mind, rather, I spend time immersed within the processes that emerge naturally from the materials at hand."

From a family of makers, Bradford was raised near St. Louis and now lives in Boonville with the painter Eric Larimore. "From upholstery and furniture building to sewing (and sowing), I've had the benefit of being surrounded by multiple generations of family who are skilled in their craft and eager to teach the next generation. My own career as an artist began with a few classes on metalsmithing and years of workshops and practice. I fabricated and sold my art jewelry full-time on the art fair circuit for about 5 years, while also teaching in both metals and fibers at Craft Alliance, the St. Louis Artist’s Guild and St. Louis Community College. In 2017 I moved to central Missouri with the plans of moving my studio there, as well, but the universe had other plans and I stepped away from the life of a full-time working artist."

All of the pieces in Bradford's show have been made in the last year and draw from our collective pandemic experience. "The past years have been challenging for all of us in so many ways and, while I’m certain those challenges are represented in this work, I think it also represents a deep, if momentary, escape from the challenges of the day-to-day. This body of work, to me, represents a joyful escape to a place of deep resilience and healing."

Join us Friday, June 3, 6-9pm for this beautiful exhibit.

This Friday is our Last First Friday (for now). Come celebrate the work of Bella Townsend and their collection, "grown". We have been so lucky to have this uniques space for 11 years (11 years!!) and one that we have not taken for granted. We wish to celebrate Dogwood & move forward in positivity, whatever that may be

Hello friends!

Just as we are coming up on year 12 in our location, our lease has been scheduled for termination for May 31st. We have been granted more time, (🙏) but we do not know how much. We have a meeting with the landlord mid-May, asking for December 2022 to finish out our schedule of exhibiting artists and to gain footing on another location, but do not expect this request to be granted. The space has plans for constructions, contractors underway to expand Wi***es Bar.

Dogwood has shown the work of hundreds of artists, and housed just as many artist's workspaces. If you don't know much about the history, here's a little info.

Dogwood Artist Workspace & Gallery has been a very unique and lucky experience and one that we have not taken for granted. Chris Morrey, sculptor and MU professor, created what is Dogwood by building the walls, running electric to each studio, and facilitating an exhibiting art gallery since 2011 before passing it on to Steph Foley and Sasha Goodnow.

Dogwood primarily specializes in exhibiting emerging local artists for our gallery walls, though we have shown artists of all caliber from all over the nation. We host artists monthly by participating in First Fridays, a downtown art walk on the first Friday of every month, and as well as host special events.

Dogwood is also focused on providing affordable workspaces for artists in the 7 studios we offer. We do not ask for more money than what is needed to cover rent and bills, therefore making it very affordable for artists that would not be able to afford the space otherwise. We also do not take commissions from our gallery walls. We want the exhibiting artist to hold that experience completely of selling (or not) their work. In short, we do not make money from this gallery, rather we share what we have.

We are a longtime contributing member of the North Village Arts District, a collaboration of art galleries in the downtown area. We have participated with True False Film Festival, hosting panels, films, and art events; Greenhouse Theater Project, hosting plays and recital practice space; and with Columbia Experimental Music Festival, hosting musical events. In short, Dogwood has housed the work of hundreds of artists over a span of 11 years.

We are devastated but shaking ourselves off, mobilizing to find a new location. Stay tuned for a fundraiser and final events in our location.

Our Last First Friday! (for now)
Let's celebrate and revel in the incredible work of our May First Friday artist, Bella Townsend. Their sculptural pieces, ceramics, and paintings are not to be missed, in a collection called "grown". How fitting of a collection to be shown for this Last First Friday, as we reflect on these gallery walls grown from a giving spirit and how we will continue to grow as an entity or as individuals.

Please join us this Friday, for an evening of Bella Townsend's collection, "grown" 6-9pm.

Painter and ceramicist Bella Townsend has been making art since they could hold a paintbrush. When their hands first touched the clay in an intro to ceramics class in college, they felt a deep connection. Now they combine the two mediums into self-reflective sculptural work.

Their First Friday at Dogwood collection is titled "grown", an ode to coming of age. Townsend says, "The work represents how I feel about fully coming into adulthood and the connections I feel with the past and the future. I make 3D work across mediums because I enjoy the physicality of it - this type of work is so expressive and interactive to me and I love working with my hands. The subject matter of my work is identity and vulnerability. I am inspired by people! I have always loved meeting people and hearing their stories and telling my own through my work."

Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, Townsend moved to Columbia in 2017 for college and is finishing up a B.A. in studio art at Mizzou. This collection has all been made over the past year.

Check out their work on Instagram:

We are beyond grateful for the continued community support and love.
Your pals at Dogwood,
Sasha & Steph

Normally around this time we would be announcing our First Friday artist for February but have decided to move Daira Hernandez’s show to a summer month. Stay tuned for our March Artist!

We are so grateful to our community for masking up at our events- thank you! We want our events to be covid responsible as possible and with these cold months it’s been a hard call to invite the community into our gallery. Since bringing back First Friday’s in August, we’ve been lucky to have doors in the gallery to open for air flow. But in this weather plus rise in covid cases, we’ve made the hard call to postpone for now. Stay safe & warm Columbia! ♥️, Dogwood

Please join us for this incredible event! January 7th, 6-9pm Sergio Slayer at Dogwood Artist Workspace! Friday, 6-9pm. Masks required.

Sergio Slayer has been performing & creating hip-hop since he was a teen. Accustomed to the stage, this is his first exhibit of paintings. Born and raised in Missouri, Sergio is a self taught artist that has been performing in Columbia for the past 17 years. He finds inspiration from the cities and museums he and his wife visit and uses spray paint and acrylics to create his work.

The collection, "Saint Marguerite", is for his late Grandma Marguerite, pieces reminiscent of her. And serendipitously enough, January 7th, the night of the exhibit, is her birthday.

Thank you all for coming out last night! So good to see you all at December First Friday Holiday Fair!
