THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE plays this Friday 10/16 at 9:45pm, as a part of the new series Shoestringers!
Tobe Hooper’s micro-budget masterpiece is equally as raw, revolting, and terrifying today as it was 50 years ago. THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE defies all expectations and tropes of what would later become synonymous with the slasher genre, yet is indelibly a sizable part of the very framework that so many of its imitators draw inspiration from. Made for just $140,000 and filmed entirely on location in Central Texas, arguably no film is more intentional in its framing of the bloodlust that surrounds every facet of American existence. As long as the chainsaw is revving, the violence will be endless.
This 4K digital restoration of THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE is presented by SHOESTRINGERS, a genre-spanning monthly series of micro-budget films.
A series of films made for next to nothing, paired with shorts made for even less: Shoestringers is a monthly showcase of microbudget filmmaking on a macro scale. Co-hosted by the Heights Theater’s own Elise Foster and local filmmaker Blaine Redden, each month brings together innovative, independently produced feature films of any genre, and groundbreaking, boundary-pushing shorts by local filmmakers, who are invited to discuss the realities, challenges, and possibilities of low-budget filmmaking. Most of us don’t have two nickels to rub together, Shoestringers is about making something anyways.
The show will be preceded by a short film titled “Gyne” by Derek Bauer
