Wiggly grizzly bear cubs, Scout and Ranger, are settling in, growing more confident every day, and reaching new milestones.

One big milestone is their new names! Scout (female) and Ranger (male) represent the people and organizations working to protect and preserve grizzly bears and their native habitats.

Not only were their names decided, funds were also raised for wild grizzly bear conservation! For a $5 minimum donation, fans voted for their favorite pair of names for the sibling cubs. One hundred percent of donations to vote went to support Vital Ground Foundation's work to protect and restore North America’s wild grizzly bear populations. Thanks to generous guests and CMZoo conservation funds, a total of $18,000 has been donated to support grizzly bear conservation efforts. Thank you for your support!

Another big milestone for the cubs is starting “howdies” with Emmett and Digger through protective barriers. While the cubs will never share the same space as our 21-year-old grizzly bears, their care team has been working with Emmett and Digger to help prepare them for their new neighbors.

Similarly, CMZoo’s year-round partner, Children’s Hospital Colorado, offers research-backed tips to help parents and caregivers prepare pets and siblings for a new baby. One reason this milestone matters is that Scout and Ranger will rotate through multiple yards and need to feel comfortable moving between spaces and having grizzly bear neighbors on the other side of the fence. Shifting between different spaces is especially important as the cubs continue to progress in their training with their keepers, while Emmett and Digger continue their own training in other yards.

POV: You hear the Giraffe Center is opening Tues., Sept. 15!

our giraffe herd explored the Giraffe Center for the first time this past week!

Thorn, the youngest giraffe, was the first to step through the doors, followed by Kay. By the end of the first day, most of the herd had explored their new home.

After the herd had a chance to explore, some of the giraffe got excited zoomies in the yard and barn!

The Giraffe Center isn’t open to guests just yet, but you may be able to catch glimpses of the giraffe in their new space from the plaza. As they settle in, the herd will continue to have access to their current training barn, their renovated and expanded yard, the yard closest to African lions (where guests can feed them), and the Giraffe Center. Giraffe feeding is still available daily in African Rift Valley from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Save the date: the Giraffe Center Grand Opening is Tues., Sept. 15! You're all invited to a short ceremony at 9:30 a.m., and the Giraffe Center will open at 10 a.m. Advance timed tickets with on-site parking are limited, and anytime-entry rideshare tickets are always available. Atka, a beloved six-year-old, seven-toed moose, is showing his dedicated keeper team that it is time for more support. His team is planning an immobilization in the coming days.

In 2023, Atka had surgery to remove a toe with progressive bone degradation from his front left foot. That amputation stopped bone degradation and saved his leg, and his life.

Moose walk on their toes. Their massive body weight, normally situated squarely above four feet, with two toes on each foot, is distributed evenly between those toes. When one toe is missing, the other toe plays double duty.

Since the surgery, three-and-a-half years ago, Atka has been living well on seven toes. At times, his gait has been abnormal, due to him shifting his leg inwards to help support his weight. This was not a surprise; when his team made the decision to remove the toe to save his leg, they knew it would not be the end of the issue. Recently, as a full-grown moose weighing 1,300 pounds with a full set of antlers, his team is also tracking issues with his remaining toe.

The grizzly bear cubs have names! Meet Scout (female) and Ranger (male).

Their names, Scout and Ranger, represent the people and organizations working to protect and preserve grizzlies and their native habitats.

“While the arrival of the cubs is a bittersweet story, it also reminds us that we all have a role to play in helping create a future where fewer bears find themselves in situations that require human intervention,” Nicole Chaney, Conservation Programs Manager, says. “That’s why we’re so excited that the donations support Vital Ground, an organization dedicated to protecting and connecting grizzly bear habitat while helping reduce conflicts between bears and people. Their work addresses the root causes of many of the challenges grizzlies face, making them an outstanding conservation partner."

Vital Ground is a nonprofit land trust whose mission is to protect and restore North America’s grizzly bear populations for future generations by conserving wildlife habitat and by supporting programs that reduce conflicts between bears and humans. Based in Missoula, Montana, CMZoo’s cubs’ home state, Vital Ground works throughout the Northern Rockies and Inland Northwest to create permanently connected landscapes that support the long-term survival of grizzly bears and the many native species that share their range. By connecting public land strongholds with protected private lands, Vital Ground is the only land trust focused on large-landscape conservation for the benefit of grizzly bears, other wildlife, and people. Founded in 1990, Vital Ground — together with many partners — has protected and enhanced over one million acres of grizzly bear habitat.

Scout and Ranger are currently settling into the behind-the-scenes yards, which are not visible to guests. If you're lucky, you may catch a glimpse of them from the Sky Ride! Stay tuned for updates on when they’ll be available for guest viewing!

Event Details:
– Advance tickets are required. No ticket sales at the front gate.
– This evening event is for adults 21-and-up only (no children or infants). IDs must be presented on event night. (No one under age 21 will be permitted, including no children or infants.)
– Chef-crafted small plates and two drink tickets are included with your ticket. Drink tickets must be used the evening of the event. No outside alcoholic beverages are allowed.
– Most animal areas will be open all evening. (Please note that Primate World and My Big Backyard will not be open during this event and the penguin building will close at dusk.)
– Live musical entertainment throughout the Zoo.
– Watch the drone show at 9:15 p.m. from nearly anywhere in the Zoo! The show will last around 15 minutes. Prime viewing spots are Elephant Boardwalk, Lodge at Moose Lake, and Grizzly Grill Roundabout.
– Mountaineer Sky Ride is weather dependent. $4 for Zoo members, $5 for non-members.
– Dress for a night of dancing, but remember you will be walking up and down the hills of the Zoo!
– Designate a driver, or better yet, don’t drive at all! Take a taxi or use a rideshare service like Lyft or Uber.
