History

The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo has been a Colorado Springs tradition since 1937, showcasing the pinnacle of rodeo talent and action, while providing wholesome entertainment for the Pikes Peak community. Spencer Penrose, an avid sportsman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, founded the Rodeo and in 1938, presented the “House that Spec built” – the 10,000 seat Will Rogers Stadium across from the Broadmoor Hotel. The name was changed to the Spencer Penrose Stadium after his death in 1939, and the Rodeo continued in that location, under the guidance of community leaders committed to Penrose’s legacy. From 1973-2001, the Rodeo was held at the 171-acre Pikes Peak Equestrian Center. From 2002-2004, the Rodeo moved indoors to the Colorado Springs World Arena. As tradition would have it, in 2005, the Rodeo returned outdoors after purchasing and renovating the Norris-Penrose Equestrian Center. Additional building improvements, including an enclosed Pavilion, continue to make the Center state of the art and a place for the Colorado Springs community to gather. The legacy of the Rodeo in the Pikes Peak region was further recognized three decades ago when the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association located their National Headquarters and Hall of Fame to Colorado Springs. As Colorado Springs second oldest event, there are many opportunities to continue making history in a town that knows and values Rodeo! Since 1946, the proceeds of the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo have been donated to military charities in the Pikes Peak Region. Colorado Springs is home to the United States Air Force Academy, U.S. NORAD/NORTHCOM (home to the American and Canadian joint forces), Air Force Space Command, Shriever Air Force Base, Peterson Air Force Base, and Fort Carson.

💛🌻Remembering Amy Jo Fields 🌻💛

The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo family is mourning the sudden passing of Amy Jo Fields, who passed away Sunday afternoon following a courageous five-month battle with neuroendocrine cancer.

Amy Jo’s connection to the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo ran deep. She was a proud Pikes Peak Rangerette and a 2005 Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Girl of the West. Her rodeo journey also included being the 2003 El Paso County Fair Queen and Miss Rodeo Colorado 2007, where she went on to represent Colorado at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant, finishing in the Top 5.

These titles represented just a few of the many ways Amy Jo shared her love for horses, rodeo and the western way of life. She was part of the Pikes Peak family for many years, creating memories and friendships that have lasted well beyond her time in the arena.

Beyond the crowns, sashes and rodeo arenas, Amy Jo was a beloved granddaughter, daughter, mother and friend. Her passing leaves an enormous void for her family, friends and the many people fortunate enough to have known her.

We extend our deepest sympathy to her family, especially her son, Zayne, her parents, friends and all who loved her.

Amy Jo will forever hold a special place in the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo family and its history. We are grateful for the years she shared with us and for the legacy she leaves behind.

Rest peacefully, Amy Jo.

🤠 Happy National Day of the Cowgirl! 🤠

Today we celebrate the women who live the Western way of life with grit, grace, courage and heart.

For more than a century, the Girl of the West tradition has been a special part of Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo history. Since 1922, these young women have represented rodeo, horsemanship and the Western way of life while serving as ambassadors for our community.

These photos are more than memories—they are pieces of a tradition that has been passed from one generation to the next. Each Girl of the West has brought her own personality, dreams and story to the role, while carrying forward the same spirit of the American cowgirl.

She rides.
She works.
She serves.
She leads.
She represents something bigger than herself.

From the arena to the parade route, from community appearances to supporting our military families, these cowgirls have worn the title with pride and helped keep the Western spirit alive in Colorado Springs and beyond.

Today, we tip our hats to every Girl of the West—past, present and future. ❤️🤠

Twenty‑five years later, we remember September 11, 2001 — and the lives forever changed that day.

We remember the 2,977 innocent lives lost.
We remember the heroes who ran toward danger.
We remember the families forever changed.
And we remember the courage, sacrifice, and unity that followed.

Today, we honor those we lost, those who served, and the generations who continue to protect the freedoms we hold dear.

This weekend, we celebrate the hardworking men and women who keep America moving — the early mornings, long days, dedication, grit, and determination that make our communities and our country strong. 💪🏼❤️🤍💙

That same spirit is at the heart of rodeo. From the cowboys and cowgirls who climb in the arena, to the stock contractors, pickup men, judges, volunteers, sponsors, production crews, behind-the-scenes teams, and fans who make it all possible — rodeo takes hard work, heart, and a whole lot of grit. 🐎🇺🇸

As we enjoy this Labor Day weekend, we’re grateful for everyone who works hard, dreams big, and helps carry on the Western way of life.

Here’s to a weekend of family, friends, freedom, and celebrating the American spirit! 🇺🇸

🇺🇸 HONORING THOSE WHO SERVED — IN A WHOLE NEW WAY 🇺🇸

As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we’re proud to see creative and meaningful ways to honor the men and women who have served our country.

USAA, a proud sponsor of the NFR Open at the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, has created the National Military Monument in Washington, D.C. Located alongside the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, these incredible LED displays resemble waving American flags while honoring the names of more than 41 million Americans who have served in every U.S. war since the Revolutionary War.

Visitors can even search the displays and online portal to find the names of loved ones who served.

A powerful reminder that honoring our military can take many forms—and that the stories and sacrifices of those who served should never be forgotten. 🇺🇸

We’re proud to partner with organizations like USAA that continue to find meaningful ways to honor our heroes and celebrate the freedoms they fought to protect.
