Al Green just released the most incredible version of R.E.M.’s classic song, “Everybody Hurts.” Did not see that coming. Same incredible voice he’s always had with a fantastic take on this song. Loved it!

So great meeting Art Alexakis from Everclear in person and seeing them perform in Dallas. I loved getting to talk to Art on my podcast several years ago and it was great to finally hear them live. Great band and fun night.

My buddies and I got to see Kathleen Edwards perform in Dallas this past week and it was easily one of the top three shows I’ve ever seen. Every song was so well executed with such emotion and honesty. If you follow my Songs of Note podcast, you may have caught episode 45 where I got to speak to Kathleen and it may have been my favorite episode ever.

The highlight of the show though was when she covered a Paul Westerberg tune that I love. I’m no singer, but I love that song and I was singing the harmony in the audience. We were just feet away from the stage. She stops the song mid chorus and asks if someone was singing harmony and I about died. Then the people around me pointed at me and she said it sounded great and to come onstage. I couldn’t believe it! I was way too nervous and didn’t, but love that she called out my Oasis shirt and said I sounded great. I even have an audio recording of it that I’ve listened to endlessly with pride haha. Such an awesome moment and memory. One of my all-time favorite songwriters.

I was in LA this week and stopped by to pay my respects at Chris Cornell’s gravesite. Someone said this seemed like a morbid choice of an activity, which I get, but I’m reminded of time after time where I was inspired by Chris, whether it was through Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Audioslave, or his solo work. It’s weird to feel such a connection to people you’ve never met because of music, but it’s also an amazing and a beautiful thing. I was reminded that his passion was something that helped fuel mine at an early age and I’m grateful to know his music.

This is the view going up Pike’s Peak at the very place that supposedly inspired the writing of “America, The Beautiful.” Katharine Lee Bates was a 33-year-old teacher and poet who saw this scene on a wagon ride up to Pike’s Peak, Colorado in 1893 and hastily wrote the lyrics in a journal after being so amazed by the beauty of the scene.

Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard said he wrote “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” as “a way to come to terms with my own thoughts on death and the afterlife. It’s a love song to someone saying, ‘No matter what happens, I’ll be with you.’” Hear the full story on the latest Songs of Note podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/songs-of-note/id1488884489?i=1000659239983

The story behind “Bittersweet Symphony” is a wild one. The Verve wrote it, based on an obscure orchestral interpretation of The Rolling Stones’ song “The Last Time.” Because of that, The Verve didn’t make any royalties on the track for 22 years. Hear the full story in the latest Songs of Note podcast.
