Shira's Quilts

Shira's Quilts Here is an archive of quilts I have made over the years. If you have an idea that you would like to turn into a quilt, please send me a message to discuss.

I started quilting in 1992, with the desire to make a quilt in honor of the birth of my first nephew. I picked out a pattern and having never quilted before, struggled with vague instructions and bought my first book, "Quilts, Quilts, Quilts." Luckily, it turned out to be a great book and suddenly I was hooked for life. Inspiration comes from beautiful fabrics and trying new techniques and embelli

shments. I love color and using traditional patterns in a modern way. I know I have found the right combination when I feel that “Yes, this is it!” rush. : ) I also love how ideas unexpectedly come forward when working on a project, often changing it into something even better than planned. I am self taught but for a class in applique and another in landscape quilting. I do my own machine quilting as well. I love the excitement of starting a new project and I enjoy the challenge of creating quilts that capture the recipient's personality. Quilting is my passion and my therapy and so gratifying. Thanks for looking at my site! If you are interested in a quilt, send me a message! I will need a minimum of 3 months notice. I don't usually take on commissions of queen size quilts, sorry. Twin size, baby quilts, throws, wall hangings, table runners, etc. Im your gal!

I can share our group challenge quilt with a theme of kitchen/vegetable. I chose the ever popular kohlrabi. 😁 I discovered it at the farmers market last year and enjoyed it all summer! I encourage you to try one if you’ve never had it. It’s a white crunchy veg, similar to a daikon, good in salads. Our next challenge is “weave.” Stay tuned!
Also we had a Pollyanna and I made a project bag and now im no longer afraid of zippers. 👍😊

I’m happy to share a commission that will eventually be displayed in a their daughter’s new restaurant. The theme is fennel and embroidered the logo. The design is based on 1800 Pennsylvania Dutch designs using fabrics and themes of the time. I came up with the quilting designs and tulips based on those from a book they gave me for inspiration. 16 x 16. Appliqué and embroidery.

Here’s my letter of the alphabet quilt challenge. It’s a D for Dallas, my Shmoopy and quilting companion. I used ribbon as a leash and printed photos with fabric paper and did some partial stitching on them to keep in place. The lamby, one of her favorites, was made from a torn up one before i threw it out. She never noticed, she has several more. 12 x12. 🐾🦴💗

Here is what came out from our last challenge - Celestial. It was fun to get into some needlepoint on this one. Since May is the flower moon I went with that one and added the Ta**us constellation in the sky. A Klimt painting of a night garden inspired the tree and the French knot flowers. Always have to take advantage of an opportunity for French knots! 😄 12 x 12.

After meeting this past weekend with the Birds on a Thread, i can post my inner animal quilt, our latest challenge. Thank you Jette Goldman for sending me the photo of the deer you saw while hiking. I printed him and cut him out of fabric paper. I used some choice scraps and fused them to make the surrounding quilted forest. this was a fun one. ❤️😊 12 x 12.

It’s been awhile so I thought I’d give you a quick update on whats in the works in my sewing room. Im being swallowed by scraps! ! I’ve got a mountain of them and thought it was high time i use them. The squares are the first in what will be a throw i cant show you the collage scrap quilt until after our next quilt group meeting next month. Also, a dream bed quilt for myself is underway. Ive had the pattern for years. I realized i bought it twice i liked it so much. I think theres probably a copyright violation there. It’s ok bc I think I’ve been in violation of a quilters law for not having a bed quilt so time to get legal lol. 🪡🧵
