On December 16th, 2022 dozens of people wore red in school to show support for senior Jordyn Zajac, suffering from Shwachman Diamond Syndrome.
SDS is a rare bone marrow failure disorder affecting majority of the body. During Jordyn’s childhood, she suffered from seizure disorder, was behind on fine motor skills, and patients diagnosed with SDS were not living long enough to get their licenses. Due to this, Jordyn has to get tested every year, going through a bone marrow biopsy surgery, while traveling to the closest doctors that will see Jordyn in Cincinnati, Ohio.
While this is routine for Jordyn and her family, the week of testings always give some fear. This year Jordyn’s mom, Kim Robbins, reached out to some of the closest people to Jordyn asking them to show support from home and give her some reassurance during the stressful week. “Something as simple as a paper cut could kill Jordyn… many, many times doctors told me Jordyn wouldn’t make it (to an age, to a milestone, etc). I learned quickly not to hope for a future. As sad as that sounds. I’ve always accepted each day as a blessing and a miracle. And here she is a senior in high school. She has defied the odds!” Robbins said.

Just like baby birds leaving the nest, Nova lab students are now stepping into their self-learning process.

After four whole months of Mr. Heist’s teachings, he is now ready to send his students off to create projects that revolve around innovation and self-learning. These projects range from many different aspects, but they all revolve around problem solving and making the world a better place.

These students have complete autonomy in this gradless class. The only thing Mr. Heist asks for his students to post their work on a site called Unruler, which tracks and monitors what students are doing.

“The step from teaching my students to letting them learn on their own makes me proud but also frightened,” said Mr. Heist.

The girls varsity basketball is off to an amazing start to the 22-23 season with being undefeated in their first 10 games. They are a well skilled team who has great chemistry and knows how to play strong defensively. “We share the ball really well and hit open player to score. We also play a strong team defense that leads to many transition plays” Ella Stein. The girls take on Owen J. Roberts at home at 7:00 pm to hopefully continue their winning streak.

Three of PV's talented AP Artists just recently finished two windows at Tri-County Toyota in Royersford. Ella McMenamin, Sydney Libby, and Elizabeth Krantz worked with the owner to develop a design and install it over the course of four different sessions. Their valuable real life experience with a client has earned the art department a generous donation, which will be used to reimburse money for supplies, a cut for the artists, and to continue to aid the department.

SENIORS WIN SPRING RALLY IN THE VALLEY - Carly Deluca

The first-ever Perkiomen Valley High School spring pep rally took place on Thursday, April 7, to honor the spring athletes and club members. Freshmen in brown, sophomores in orange, juniors in white, and seniors in black all filled the competition gym with roaring cheers for their classmates.

The pep rally started with a parade of spring athletes, each team taking its turn to be cheered on by the students.

“You could feel the encouraging energy in the gym,” said Chris Gorla, a junior on the high school’s varsity baseball team. “It felt good to be recognized the same way that fall sports do,” Gorla said. This spring pep rally has never been held before, and this year Mr. Felty, Mrs. Brecht, and the rest of the PV Athletics for Equity team organized the rally in an effort to make Perkiomen Valley High School a more inclusive environment.

Following the athlete and club member recognitions were the competitive games. The rivalry between each grade level was strong, with chants being relayed between each game. Some of the games included musical chairs, a tennis ball relay race, and a lacrosse challenge.

“The musical chairs were interesting. One of the principals had to break them up. Maybe they were on the wrestling team.” Sarah Quinn, a junior, said.

These competitions had never been seen at a Perkiomen Valley High School pep rally before, adding an element of surprise to the students in the stands as well as participants in the games.

As the pep rally finished, Mr. Kuhn announced that the seniors had won, with the juniors coming in second place. The gym erupted in cheers.

The seniors won the fall pep rally, the powderpuff game, and the spring pep rally all in one year.

This spring pep rally was groundbreaking for Perkiomen Valley High School as spring athletes were able to be honored, students involved in clubs were recognized, and new, innovative games were introduced for the students to take a break from work and cheer on their peers.

Students walk out to protest “Don’t Say Gay” - Carter Martin

Students held a walkout protest to support the LGBTQ+ community and the “Don’t Say Gay” bill that was passed in Florida on March 28. Organized by Kylie Borghi, the protest was held on Friday, April 1. At the beginning of third period, students walked out of the front doors and around the parking lot to the football field. The students first gathered together, being greeted by staff as they walked out to the field. Students stood with flags, and were making signs as peers approached the area. Some students started playing music while the organizers of the walkout directed everyone to the edge of the field for a speech. Everyone was encouraged to interact with the group, giving time to share their own personal experiences if wanted. Students were given time to speak to the group, and all were allowed to express their views. As individuals….
