Some BTS diagrams from Texas A&M University’s “Lets Work Together” Commercial.

“For this one, my gaffer and I were really chasing a naturalistic feel. We didn’t want to walk into a space and make it look like we had just lit it. Every light needed to feel like it belonged there and, whenever possible, have some motivation behind it.

We leaned heavily on Aputure fixtures (mixed with a few other misc fixtures) throughout the shoot, mixing soft, diffused sources with harder edge light depending on the environment. For several scenes it wasn’t so much a matter of how many lights we needed but rather how much we need to control the existing lighting with diffusion and negative. Each scene had its own challenges and presented its own lighting style ranging from sunlit spaces, to workshops, to arena style lighting.

The camera package was an Alexa Mini paired with Cooke Vintage Speed Panchros, which gave us a really nice balance of character and consistency across a pretty wide range of locations.

Most of the spot was shot over five days with an awesome G&E crew we’ve worked with on several projects who always make us better. We also broke off into smaller teams for some second unit work, and for Lyle’s porch scene, we went very lean: our director, producer, our gaffer, 2nd unit AC, and myself traveled out to meet Lyle on tour, with a local grip helping us wrangle things on the ground.

A closer look at working with Lyle Lovett on this year’s national ad for Texas A&M University, “Let’s Work Together.”

Lovett, a 1979 A&M graduate, performed a cover of Wilbert Harrison’s “Let’s Work Together” for the project, honoring the original while bringing his unique style to the arrangement.

The result was a track that served as the anchor point of a campaign built around what it means to be an Aggie.
