At the beginning of the month, our Middle School & Elementary Student Leadership Teams held a silent auction fundraiser to raise money for Meals from the Heartland to come to the school. Each advisory at the Jr/Sr high had to create a themed basket to auction off.

The two advisories that raised the most money were Mrs. Snyder's and Mr. Webster's group with their Tigerhawk Pride silent auction items. For their prize, both advisories got to pie Mr. Jones in the face today!

He was a great sport! And, we had a TON of fun! :-)

Our Murder Mystery unit is in full swing! In this unit, we work on supporting arguments with evidence and reasoning. We also focus on collaborative discussion.

This is one of my favorite units to do with students because it allows them to do what they enjoy doing most: talk to each other! 😂

Starting next week, we will move into the writing portion of this unit, in which students will be creating their own mysteries!

The 7th graders are currently reading The Giver. Jonas, the main character, has the ability to “see beyond.” This means he can see things that other people in his dystopian community cannot. Today, we did an activity that put students to the test. Students got to experience the feeling of not being able to see what others can through optical illusions. We then had a discussion regarding how this activity relates to the novel.

It is hard to believe we are less than a month away from the end of the first semester. These guys continue to impress me every day! 😊

Over the past few weeks, students were given a task to write an expository essay about a country they would like to know more about. After writing the essay, students created a visual advertisement and brochure. Today, they got to share their research with their peers by presenting their findings in small groups.

When I started preparing my classroom for the year, I didn’t know if I would get to see students do much peer interaction with everything going on. While we have to take more precautions, getting to see the kids share their ideas and their hard work with their classmates makes my heart so happy.

One thing I will never say no to.... students asking to read their writing out loud to the class.

We are getting into our suspenseful writing unit, and it’s so fun to watch the kids ENJOY the act of writing.

“If you aren’t enjoying writing it, you can hardly expect someone else to enjoy reading it.”

Today we reviewed for a test over the short story, “Seventh Grade,” by Gary Soto.

We used an engaging site called Quizizz, which allows students to answer questions at their own pace, while also being able to compete with others.

Happy Friday, everyone!

This photo is super special, because these kindergarteners are now my 7th grade students! I found this photo and just had to share.

When I was a senior in high school, we went down to the elementary and taught them Spanish! Now I get to be their 7th grade English teacher! 😆

We went outside to write today! The students had 5 minutes to journal about the best day of their life. I was so surprised and happy when they asked me if they could have an extra 5 minutes to continue writing!

I will never say no to that! 😁🗒

Today I had each student write a letter to their future self. With everything going on in the world, I wanted students to be able to look back on this moment and reflect on it at the end of the year.

I asked them to respond to the following questions:
1. What excites you the most about 7th grade?
2. What is your favorite subject in school?
3. What goals do you want to accomplish this year?
4. Describe a day at school as it right now during the pandemic
5. What are you good at? What is difficult for you?
6. Who are some people in your grade that you would like to get to know better?
7. Look up a quote that you want to use as your motto for the year

I’m so excited to have them read these in May! 😄

It’s been 5 months since there have been any students in this classroom... I’m so ready to see all of the kids on Monday!

One of my favorite signs in this room says,

“What I love most about my classroom is who I share it with.”

Welcome back, Tigerhawks! 🧡💙
