September 11, 2001 — 25 years ago today.
Today, we pause and remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost. We remember the families who woke up that morning never knowing their lives were about to change forever. We remember the first responders who ran toward danger, the ordinary people who showed extraordinary courage, and the countless acts of kindness that emerged in the midst of unimaginable tragedy.
And we remember the days that followed—the days when strangers became neighbors, when communities came together, when compassion seemed louder than division, and when a country grieving together discovered just how much we could carry for one another.
That is part of what makes Come From Away such a powerful story.
It isn’t a story about the destruction of September 11th. It is a story about what happened in the aftermath. 38 planes carrying nearly 7,000 passengers that were diverted to a tiny town in Newfoundland, Canada. About strangers who arrived frightened, confused, and stranded—and the people who opened their homes, shared their meals, and cared for them as their own. Canada opening its doors to people from all over the world. A country who showed compassion in the face of uncertainty.
Tonight, as we gather to tell this story, we do so with tremendous respect for the day that began this moment.
We remember. We honor. We carry their stories forward.
May we never forget September 11, 2001. May we never forget the kindness, courage, and humanity that followed.
