33 Contemporary Gallery is pleased to present New Zip Code, a solo exhibition by Cuban-American artist Arlet Gómez.

On view June 5–30, 2026, the exhibition will be presented inside the beautiful Palm Beach Art & Design Showroom in Lake Worth Beach, Florida.

New Zip Code explores childhood, imagined cities, migration, and the spiritual longing for eternal dwelling places through Gómez’s textured contemporary visual language. Created through layered surfaces of oil and acrylic, the works bring together neo-expressionist brushwork, impressionistic light, and symbolic architectural forms that speak to memory, displacement, faith, and the search for belonging.

Throughout the exhibition, children appear as dreamers—figures of imagination, hope, and spiritual resilience—while embedded toy soldiers from the artist’s childhood in Cuba emerge as symbolic antagonists. Houses, castles, boats, and imagined cities become emotional and spiritual structures, fragile yet full of longing.

The exhibition also includes an installation of minimal wooden structures inspired by digital wireframe models, extending Gómez’s imagined architectures into the gallery space and inviting visitors to move through a psychological landscape of memory, vulnerability, and hope.

Please join us for the opening reception honoring the artist:

Open Call for Artists | Encounters with Light in the Age of Perception

33 Contemporary Gallery is pleased to announce our next international online exhibition, Encounters with Light in the Age of Perception, curated by Sergio Gomez.

This exhibition invites artists to explore light not only as a visual element, but as a language, symbol, atmosphere, and storyteller. In a time shaped by constant imagery and shifting attention, light becomes a powerful way to examine how we see, interpret, and construct meaning.

Selected works will be featured in an online exhibition on Artsy.net from June 1–30, 2026, with a print-on-demand exhibition catalog also published. Participating artists will also be invited to a live Zoom online reception with the curator on Friday, June 5 at 11 AM Eastern Time, where selected works and the curatorial vision will be highlighted.

The painting through its representational accuracy immediately transports one to the scene of domestic normality but also a fraught intimacy as if of the bathtub, the shower area, the shower curtain, some sort of private domestic interior. We sense how everyone has been there: it is relatable in that way.

The face of the presented figure is pensive, even melancholic; fraught with the weight of the world, in this sense it’s realistic. At the same time, the expression, slightly averted down, is indeterminate. The sadness-sense in the facial expression could just be an accidental artifact – or the person might really be concerned, if not sad. In this manner the expression of the figure in the painting invites various narratives but does not impose one on the viewer.

We look again, and struggle to place the scene – where is the figure? Is it a curtain in a windowsill, this filmy presence past the figure? Or a diaphanous curtain across a floor? Or merely diaphanous imagery in a painting, an uncanny surface related to the title of the painting, “Unmasked”?

In this sense the image becomes cleverly surreal. If one looks carefully, one notices that the diaphanous veil or curtain breaks into two, one which appears to go behind the figure, while another goes in front of her. But it is hard to tell. There is an elegance of indeterminacy in the image to accompany its figurative precision.

In this manner the painting is indeterminate. At the same time, the description of the human figure by the painting is elegant and precise, but the expression of the figure continues to make one circle back to the thought: the curtain here is see-through. She is vulnerable, in a crouching-esque position. It is as if, in some manner, against her will, or against her comfort, she has been “unmasked.” This creates a drama in the painting.

All of this is possible due to the diligence of the representational accuracy of the painstaking work with the oil paints. Continue reading at our website https://33pa.net/
