This post is for poultry breeders in hopes that you may be willing sell or donate fertile hatching eggs for the program. The program plans to have eggs distributed to youth participants on Monday, March 2nd. If interested, please reply to this post by Monday, February 16th. Myself or one of our poultry volunteers (Erica Orlowski or Matt Gogis) are willing to make arrangements to pick-up eggs if needed (Sunday, March 1st), we are also open to paying for shipping if that is a viable option. If you are not interested but know of a breeder whom may be, feel free to forward this to others.
Below is an overview of the program to give you a better idea of what this program offers youth participants.
Overview:
Youth participants generally receive between 12 and 20 eggs each to incubate (depending on supply availability). These eggs are from various poultry breeders whom breed for show purposes. We try to provide a good mix of breeds, both standard and bantam. After hatch, we meet once a month focusing on the topics above and also educating youth on how to identify what breeds they have hatched. At the final class in July we reveal the mystery to see if they identified them correctly and teach youth how to prepare for the county fair in August. After fair, we encourage youth to attend the Eastern NY Poultry Association show in Cobleskill, NY to experience an APA/ABA show. Swapping of birds to create breeding pairs/trios is also encouraged. We hold a class in early December each year to teach youth about breeding poultry.
