This week, we're excited to recognize Brian Wurst, instructor in the Professional Crafts Program at Haywood Community College and an invaluable partner to the Haywood County Arts Council's Quilt Trails program.

Brian generously shares his woodworking expertise, craftsmanship, and time by building the high-quality quilt blocks that serve as the foundation for our public art projects. His attention to detail and commitment to excellence ensure that each block is strong, seamless, and built to last for years to come.

Before a single brushstroke is painted, Brian's skillful work provides the sturdy canvas that makes every quilt block possible. His dedication helps preserve and grow this beloved tradition throughout our community.

Kadir Nelson’s fine work often graces the covers of The New Yorker. Here, though, he tackles a truly monumental subject.

Happy birthday, Chef José Andrés! 👨‍🍳 Internationally recognized for his humanitarian work, Andrés describes himself as “a chef who believes in feeding the many, not just the few.”

When a 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti in 2010, he flew there to help. Under the guidance of women refugees, Andrés and other volunteers cooked black beans into a creamy comfort food.

This marked the beginning of World Central Kitchen, a non-profit that provides food relief to people impacted by natural disasters and other crises.

In this portrait by Kadir Nelson, "José Andrés and the Olla de Barro that Feeds the World," Nelson uses oil on linen to bring viewers into Andrés’s work of serving others and the power of food to provide comfort in crisis. The clay vessel Andrés holds brims with soup—and with hope.

Happy Solstice!

Welcoming the Longest Day 🌞

Today marks the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. For centuries, people have gathered at Stonehenge to celebrate this seasonal turning point, continuing traditions that stretch back thousands of years.

In this 1961 aquatint, Stonehenge, Julian Trevelyan captures the monument silhouetted against a glowing midsummer sun. To create the print, Trevelyan used shaped printing plates cut to the forms of the sun and stones, leaving their distinctive outlines impressed into the paper. The bright orange sun was made using sugar lift aquatint, a printmaking technique that allows artists to paint directly onto a plate before etching, creating expressive, painterly areas of tone.

Remembering on Memorial Day with Charley Harper’s “Fearless Feathers” 🇺🇸
This Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.
Charley Harper served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a reconnaissance scout in the Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon of the 104th Infantry Division in Europe. His wartime experience deeply influenced his efficient, minimalist artistic style — often working quickly under pressure, sketching maps, battle scenes, and portraits for his unit.
One of Harper’s most beloved prints, “Fearless Feathers,” perfectly captures a bold, courageous spirit. In his own words:
“Feather for feather, the hummingbird is the fiercest, fastest, feistiest flier in the firmament. Forget the hawk, the owl, the eagle.”
Though small in size, the hummingbird embodies fearless energy and resilience. In many American traditions, hummingbirds also symbolize joy after hardship, resilience, and even the spirits of loved ones who have passed. Many find a hummingbird sighting to be a comforting message from those we’ve lost.
On this day of remembrance, “Fearless Feathers” serves as a beautiful reminder that true courage often comes in humble packages — just like the many young soldiers who displayed extraordinary bravery.
We pause today to honor their service, their sacrifice, and their memory.
