๐ŸฆŽ๐ŸŽ‰ HAPPY NATIONAL LIZARD DAY!!! ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸฆŽ
Did you know there are more than 7,000 known species of lizards found around the world?! ๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸฆŽ From tiny geckos to giant monitors, lizards come in an incredible variety of shapes, sizes, and personalities!

Today, weโ€™re putting the spotlight on some of our scaly superstars! ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸฆŽ Asian Water Monitor - Gamble
These impressive reptiles are excellent swimmers and spend plenty of time around rivers, wetlands, and other waterways! They have powerful tails that help propel them through the water and can hold their breath for surprisingly long periods. Theyโ€™re also excellent climbers and have sharp claws that help them navigate trees and escape danger!

๐ŸฆŽ Bearded Dragons- Sage & Silas
Bearded dragons get their name from the spiky scales under their chin, which they can puff out when they feel threatened or want to show off! ๐Ÿ˜Ž Theyโ€™re native to Australia and are omnivores, meaning they enjoy both plant matter and insects. And when theyโ€™re basking, you may see them open their mouths wideโ€”thatโ€™s called gaping and helps them regulate their body temperature!

๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸฆŽ Iguanas- Zuko & Ozai
Iguanas are incredible climbers and spend a lot of their time up in trees! ๐ŸŒณ Many iguanas are primarily herbivores, munching on leaves, flowers, and fruits. They also have a third eyeโ€”called a parietal eyeโ€”on top of their head that can detect changes in light! ๐Ÿ‘€ They may not see the world exactly like we do, but that little extra sensory organ is pretty amazing!
And hereโ€™s one more cool factโ€ฆ ๐ŸฆŽ๐Ÿ’ฅ
Many lizards have a tail-defense trick! Some species can detach their tails when grabbed by a predator, giving them a chance to escape. Talk about leaving someone behind! ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿ’š๐ŸฆŽ Come celebrate National Lizard Day with us at Hillcrest Park Zoo! Come visit our scaly friends and see these incredible reptiles up close!
๐ŸŒฟ Thereโ€™s always something fascinating to discover at the zoo!

๐Ÿšจ A Very Important Reminder ๐Ÿšจ
It has come to our attention that an increasing number of guests are feeding our animals leaves pulled from trees around the exhibits and, in some cases, bringing outside food into the zoo to feed them.
Please stop. ๐Ÿ›‘
Our animals are on carefully managed diets designed by our animal care staff. Feeding them unauthorized food or vegetation can make them seriously ill and puts their health at risk.
We have also caught numerous people breaking branches and stripping leaves from trees throughout the zoo. As a result, some of these damaged trees have had to be removed. This behavior not only harms the zoo's landscape but also creates unnecessary costs and damage to the park.
Even more concerning, we've seen videos being shared on social media encouraging others to do the same. This is irresponsible and promotes behavior that endangers the animals we work so hard to protect.
If you truly care about the animals, the best way to show it is by respecting the rules and allowing our trained staff to care for them.
Please help us keep our animals healthy and our zoo beautiful by:
โ€ข Not feeding any animals unless it is part of an authorized zoo experience.
โ€ข Not picking leaves, branches, or plants from exhibits.
โ€ข Respecting all posted rules during your visit.
We appreciate the vast majority of our guests who help us protect the animals and their home. For those choosing not to follow these rules, please understand that these actions have real consequences for the animals' health and the zoo itself.
