New glasses. Cat eye frames.

And I immediately felt like I belong in 1960.

That’s not a coincidence.

That’s media doing what media does.

Cat eye glasses = a specific era, a specific woman, a specific cultural moment.

Media taught us that before you ever tried on a pair.

Glasses are a health aide.

But Hollywood gave them a whole personality. Lol.

And we’ve been performing it ever since.

But I always wondered — who was she really serving when reporting?

That question led me to agenda setting theory — one of the most important concepts in media psychology.

The news doesn’t tell you what to think. It tells you what to think about. And the frame around the story shapes how your nervous system receives it.

Ebony. Jet. John H. Johnson. He understood this before the theory had a name. He built a counter-frame.

Now I get my news from AP and from the people in real time. But even that feed has a frame.

There is no view from nowhere. The question is — whose frame do you choose to understand?

When did you decide to get on social media?

Most of us didn’t decide. We migrated.

AOL → MySpace → Facebook → Twitter → Instagram → TikTok.

No memo. No vote. Just movement toward where the humans were.

I once found myself sitting in Gina Prince-Bythewood’s home in the Valley — interviewing for a director’s assistant position on one of her films. She asked me how I got there.

Honestly? I told her that all in all I was just following the flow out here. Staying present. I had no idea anyone was watching.

That’s Social Presence Theory. Humans move toward whatever makes other people feel most real to them.

We were never following platforms.

We were following each other.

97 years. Not one Black Best Director. Not one. 🎬

The science explains what the data shows — ingroup bias. You vote for who feels familiar. Even anonymously. Even when you call yourself progressive.

This isn’t about giving anyone an award they didn’t earn. It’s about asking why 97 years of merit voting produced the same result.

Statistically — that’s not random. That’s a pattern.
