Today, we remember Matthew Shepard, whose life and tragic death became a catalyst for conversations about hate, acceptance, and human dignity. His story continues to inspire people to work toward a more compassionate and inclusive world.
As we honor his memory on this anniversary, we are reminded of the importance of keeping these conversations alive. One way communities continue this work is through productions of The Laramie Project, a play that explores the impact of Matthew’s story and the people whose lives were forever changed by it.
We invite our community to join us for this production, June 4th through the 13th of 2027, not only as a theatrical experience, but as an opportunity to reflect, learn, and remember. May we continue to honor Matthew Shepard’s legacy through understanding, empathy, and action.
On the evening of October 6, 1998 , Matthew Shepard visited the Fireside Lounge and the events that followed led to his death in one of the most infamous LGBTQ+ hate crimes in American history. Matthew died on October 12 at 12:53 a.m. at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado with his family by his side.
In honor of his legacy, we hold space on this day for reflection and remembrance.
