Folded Paper Launches New Projects
Dr. Kanta Kochhar writes:
Folded Paper Dance and Theatre Limited has launched a multi-year arts research and action project to promote cross-cultural exchange through the creation of Participatory Theatres of Accessible Ecologies. These theatres—cross-sectoral, inclusive, and participatory—encompass arts-based events designed to make experiences in both urban and natural settings available to diverse communities, including those with disabilities, so that new forms of engagement with our cultural and natural heritages can emerge. PT draws from the arts, design, and new media that catalyzes cultural diversity and cultural diplomacy so we become more responsive global citizens in relation to each other, to our cities, and to the natural world.
Since Folded Paper is based in Hong Kong, it is uniquely positioned as it builds on prior work in the city to foster a dynamic and far-reaching arts-driven conversation on how a variety of cultural perspectives—including Buddhist philosophies of nature, meditation, and art—can inform PT. As we investigate both the Chinese and Indian legacies of Buddhism, and later, as this project begins to travel to ethnic minority communities within Hong Kong, we will fold a series of investigations into the cross-sections of the respective legacies as they apply to PT. PT will draw on an engagement with the local Hong Kong heritage, arts, design, and new media scene and, eventually, build transnational conversations with respective partners in the US and in India.
PT involves four tiers of activity: 1) the application of universal design to the creation of a cross-cultural aesthetics of performance and related visual arts projects; 2) the development of an arts pedagogy that includes participatory workshops and events for broad audiences that engage with methods for hearing, seeing, and moving differently, especially from the perspective of the hard-of-hearing, Deaf, Blind, and the mobility impaired; 3) innovative performance and site-specific installation series that makes the arts available to diverse communities; and 4) a research arm that articulates and supports the related scholarly investigations into these topics.
