After two loooong years, we're finally winding down construction on the new studio.

All that's left are the door-bottom seals, ceiling clouds, interior window glass, paint touch-ups, mic/speaker line terminations, and hanging acoustic panels... and it's time to wheel in the old Frightbox gear.

If your home-recorded vocals still have that weird "demo” quality to them, there’s a good chance you’re trying to fix the wrong things.

Most people immediately reach for:

A different compressor plugin...

Another fancy pants (unnecessary) vocal chain...

But some of the biggest things separating amateur-sounding vocals from polished, album-quality vocals happen in ways most people never even consider.

Yup, I own six Shure SM57's.

But I’m certainly NOT a microphone collector...

And definitely not because I think owning more gear magically makes your recordings sound better.

I’m actually pretty allergic to gear snobbery.

I’d much rather own a handful of affordable, dependable tools that I know inside and out than constantly chase the latest microphone, plugin, amp sim, or whatever else we’re being told we “need” this week.

And the SM57 is the perfect example of this.

I’ve used these things on guitars, drums, vocals, horns, and all kinds of recordings over the years...

Sometimes in studios...

Sometimes in garages...

Sometimes on beer-spilled stages...

And they almost just WORK.

Compression is one of the most powerful tools in mixing...

But that DOESN’T mean every track in your mix needs to be compressed.

One of the biggest mistakes I see home studio musicians make is throwing compressors on guitars, cymbals, buses, and basically everything else just because they think that’s what a “professional” mix is supposed to look like.

And sometimes?

The compressor is actually making the mix WORSE.

In this video, I’m breaking down exactly when I SKIP compression completely, including real-world examples with:

• Drum overheads and cymbals
• Distorted guitars
• Drum bus compression

More importantly, I’ll show you the simple question I ask BEFORE loading a compressor:

What problem am I actually trying to solve?

If you can’t answer that question, you probably don’t need the compressor yet.

5 YEARS of the Frightbox Mix Crypt… absolutely insane.

What started as a little Facebook group in 2021 has grown into an actual community where real progress is being made… mixes are improving, songs are getting finished, and some members are even starting to work with clients of their own.

I couldn’t be happier.

And honestly, it’s wild to think about how many gimmicky things have come and gone in the music production world over the last 5 years.

Magic plugins.

AI tools.

One-click mastering.

“Secret” mix tricks.

Endless hype around the next thing that’s supposed to fix everything.

But after 5 years of working with this awesome community, I’m more convinced than ever that the real stuff ALWAYS wins:

Better understanding of EQ and compression...

Learning how to adjust fader level so the mix actually balances before you start nuking it with plugins...

Practicing on raw, real-world multitracks that don’t already sound “finished.”

And most importantly…

Getting real-world feedback from people who can point out what you’re not hearing yet.

That’s the stuff that never goes out of style.

Now that my new studio build is wrapping up, I’m excited to bring this next era of the Crypt to life...

No fancy third-party tools and no expensive stuff hiding behind the curtain.

Just real mixing decisions.

Drums are the backbone of all great rock or metal mixes…

And when they sound fake, small, or disconnected, it can make the whole mix feel lackluster and like a typical home-recorded "demo".

That said, I don’t want you thinking you need a perfect room, expensive mics, or another magical quick-fix drum plugin.

Whether you’re using MIDI drums or recording a real kit at home, there are a few common mistakes that hold most of us back...and the good news is that they’re completely fixable.​

Most people try to make distorted guitars clearer by reaching for EQ..

Boost the top end...

Search for and notch out "problem" frequencies...

Maybe start swapping plugins or messing with multiband compression...

But sometimes the problem isn’t that your guitars need more EQ.

Sometimes the distortion itself is smearing the pick attack and note definition that made the part sound clear in the first place.

My latest video shows a simple way to bring some of that clarity back without making your guitars harsh, thin, or fake-sounding.

The good news is that it’s DEAD SIMPLE and you won’t have to spend a dime on the latest and greatest gimmicky plugin.
