Part Two: A deeper look at “The City Beautiful” a photographic collage turned digital painting celebrating a magnificent city of historic grit and grandeur.

A curtain formed from the facade of Cleveland Museum Natural History combined with the Tiffany stained glass of Wade Memorial Chapel at Lake View Cemetery and the rotunda dome of the former Cleveland Trust Bank/Heinens building.

The curtain appears in motion and mid-reveal of something spectacular. A cityscape architecturally layered in a surreal scene.

“Not yet, but I will soon.” Thinking I would. But I’ll tell you what, it is damn hard capturing this beautiful building without environmental distractions, scaffolding, and jammed lots. Every so often I’d come back and…

and tinker away at some photos, but quickly realized that I would have to be strategic about my captures and my editing. I had resolved to come out with a wide shot piece of the market in 2026… I just had to make the time (which for this adhd brain is an undertaking of its own…

Then one day, Miranda (Brent’s better half) reached out with a request… “Brent is OBSESSED with the West Side Market. We have one of your portrait pieces, but he’s dying for a wide version, do you have something like that? I think it would be a great birthday present.”

“Miranda,” I said, “Sadly I do not have one but I know of his obsession and I agree with you. Shall we make one special for him?” So we did. And it was.

The amount of fine detail work I put into this piece surprised me… I kept on finding areas to clean up, places to add a little surreal energy. I wanted this piece to walk the line of photo and painting- real and surreal- grounded and magical… and that’s exactly what I did.

Thank you Miranda for thinking of me to create this for Brent. Thank you both for pushing me to do the thing I’ve been wanting to do. Enjoy YOUR West Side Market.
