Earlier this month, we opened Zawj | زوج—what at first might have felt like a One Piece Viewing was actually an immersive experience years in the making.
Developed by Yasmeen Nematt Alla and Jillian Blackwell, Zawj unfolded across the house and grounds through sculpture, architecture, sound, vibration, translation, exchange, and performance. Material excavated directly from SHED’s grounds and foundation became part of the work itself, rooting the project quite literally in the physical history of the place.
At its center is the crinkle-crankle wall, incorporating two seats in the form of a conversation chair—a structure meant not only to be viewed, but occupied. The work remains accessible during SHED’s regular open hours, and visitors are invited to sit, spend time, and experience it for themselves.
Our website is now updated with documentation from the project, including the outdoor recording of Lullaby, now available to listen to in full.
Lullaby was composed by Mohammad Motevaselan and performed during the opening by harpists Stephan Haluska and Celia van den Bogert.
