Material is a funny word. Sometimes it describes what something is made of. Sometimes it describes years of accumulated knowledge, skill, obsession, experimentation, and care.

Last night’s JUNK NAILS workshop with Rachel Eckenrode wasn’t really about nails. It was about learning how a material behaves, how techniques travel between disciplines, and how knowledge gets passed from one set of hands to another.

And if you’d rather wear the art than make it, Rachel still has a few nail appointments available. DM for details✨

Curious what to expect at Rachel Eckenrode’s “Junk Nails: Assemblage as Adornment” workshops? Here are a few examples of things people have made. It doesn’t have to be nails — the canvas is really up to you. We love seeing how people translate these techniques into their own visual language and practice.

We’re hosting these workshops to introduce people to a technical skill, a new material, and a different way of thinking about making — from nail techs to painters, sculptors, art students, and anyone curious about experimentation.

A few spots are still open. Join us Thursday or Friday from 6–8 PM ✨

DM to RSVP or purchase online through the link in bio.

MEET JILLIAN BLACKWELL [Lagniappe Bead Shop Vendor]

Not only is Jillian one of our Lagniappe Bead Shop vendors, she is also the curator behind the summer exhibition series at (with the first exhibition opening tomorrow!).

Jillian Blackwell is an artist, curator, writer, and art handler whose work explores the peripheral and the essential — asking what travels alongside the things we assign meaning to, and how those relationships shape our understanding of objects, memory, and place.

She received her MFA in Painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art and earned a BA in Fine Arts with a concentration in Ceramics from the University of Pennsylvania. Jillian is also the Editorial Coordinator for DARIA Art Magazine and runs Chore Gallery, a project space situated inside a cabinet in the kitchen of her studio apartment.

A few words from Jillian about her beads:

“These beads were produced about ten years ago, when I was still working primarily as a ceramicist. I made them in a shared studio space in the Outer Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco, just a couple blocks from the Pacific Ocean. They are made with black clay and nichrome wire, and some include black Icelandic sand gathered by a friend during a trip there. It has been wonderful to revisit these beads — to pull them out and return them to the world in this new context.”

Come spend time with Jillian’s work and the rest of the Lagniappe Bead Shop before my new build! closes May 30.

We love local small businesses — especially woman-owned ones — and over the years has become part of our SHED community.

Getting our nails done has honestly become part of how we care for ourselves, maintain mental health, and stay connected to other artists and makers in Cleveland. Supporting local nail artists is part of our regular routine, which is why partnering with Glossy while bringing New Orleans nail artist Rachel Eckenrode (.fool) to SHED this week felt like such a natural fit.

If you’ve ever sat in a chair at Glossy wondering “HOW do they do that?!” — come find out.

Rachel will be teaching her take on “junk nails,” exploring how UV gel can function not only in nail work, but as a sculptural and creative material in its own right. Think texture, layering, adornment, color, objects, beads, and tiny wearable sculptures. Workshops are this Thursday & Friday 6-8pm at SHED. [link in bio for info]

No nail license needed — just curiosity.

Come learn something new, make something weird, and remember to support local businesses and artists 💅

This upcoming week is the FINAL week to experience akeylah wellington’s my new build! before SHED closes for the summer.

From Thursday–Saturday, New Orleans nail artist Rachel Eckenrode will be in residence at SHED hosting a pop-up nail salon alongside evening workshops Thursday and Friday centered around nail art as sculpture, adornment, and material practice.

Then on Saturday we close things out big: akeylah will host a Mancala tournament using custom boards she created for the exhibition, and to honor our shared Louisiana connection we’ll be serving a huge pot of red beans & rice for the community (especially for those who missed our Monday Beans dinners).

We hope you’ll join us to gather, eat, play, make things, and celebrate our final exhibition before fall programming begins

One week away ✨

We’re thrilled to bring New Orleans nail artist Rachel Eckenrode (.fool / MADNails & Lab + Lounge) to Cleveland for a mini residency, workshops, and pop-up salon at SHED Projects in collaboration with

Rachel’s practice moves between salon work, sculpture, fashion, film, and object-making — treating nails as intimate, wearable artworks through texture, color, adornment, and experimental materials. Her work has appeared in Allure, Claws, Your Honor, BET+ productions, Essence Festival, and numerous collaborative art projects.

During her residency, Rachel will lead JUNK NAILS: Assemblage as Adornment, a hands-on workshop exploring nail art as material practice. Participants will learn foundational painting, layering, and 3D embellishment techniques while creating sculptural nail keychains and wearable objects using materials and artist-made beads from the Lagniappe Bead Shop.

No experience needed. All materials provided. You’re also welcome to bring a small object of your own to adorn.

Workshops + appointments are limited.

Purchase tickets through the SHED website or Venmo $50 with your preferred date to -banzhaf (SHED Projects).

The shotgun house is a residential architectural form most commonly associated with the American South and the Caribbean. Long and narrow, rooms are arranged one behind the other—traditionally with doors aligned straight through the structure, allowing air to move through the house in humid climates.

The form carries layered histories tied to migration, labor, economics, vernacular building practices, and survival. While often associated with New Orleans, shotgun houses trace influences across Haiti, West Africa, and the broader Caribbean diaspora.

akeylah wellington’s my new build! pulls from these architectural histories while reconsidering what building can look like today—using beads, craft materials, memory, and improvisation to think through home, ownership, and construction as both physical and emotional processes.

On view through May 30. Open Hours (House) today: 12–5 PM
