Life & Death in Black & White

Life & Death in Black & White November 2nd at The Loren Naji Studio Gallery Of course, in the end, it is always left to the eye of the beholder. The unsung hero of the art world..

Who can correctly say what art exactly is…Is it simply paint spilled across a canvas, Multimedia styling’s of the broken-hearted outcasts or Commercial work for mass consumption? But one thing can be documented for sure, the plight of the Illustrator. The one who often puts his blood, sweat, tears and time into their work and far to often, gets over looked by the so-called "art inteligencia". At t

imes dismissed as pulp, and "uneducated".

“Life & Death in Black & White” is a collection of today’s finest graphic illustrators, album cover artists, comic artists, tattoo artists, etc depicting their view of life and death . L/D in B/W means to showcase the time, detail, dedication and imagination put forth by these national and local artists and bring them and the art of illustration the full credit and appreciation that it has always rightly deserved. Well it's been a while since we posted anything, sorry about that. Been busy at the drawing table, like we know all you artists have been. Here's a piece from Human Furnace that was used for death metal band Shed the Skin's newest album.

It's with great sadness that we mourn the loss of a true master. A pioneer, a visionary and the forefather of modern illustration, Bernie Wrightson. Thank you for sharing over a half a century of your creativity, unrivaled talent and awe-inspiring vision. RIP Mr. Wrightson, you will never be forgotten. Your work will live forever.

Truly sad news, but retired or not, Bernie Wrightson has done more than most artists could even dream of. Thank you for all of your art and inspiration. There's no expiration date on art, and Wrightson's will be admired, worshipped, and inspiring forever. Without a doubt, one of the most important illustrative artists of all time. A true artistic pioneer, who paved they way for so many others. Get well Soon, Bernie.

Dear Fans and Friends,

I apologize for our silence for the past few months. Last November Bernie began falling again, and having obvious problems with perception. He had to undergo yet another brain surgery to relieve bleeding, and then spend several weeks undergoing in-patient rehabilitation. Unfortunately, it appears that he has lasting damage: he has extremely limited function on his left side, and is unable to walk or reliably use his left hand, among other limitations.

We have had to come to the sad conclusion that he is now effectively retired: he will produce no new art, and he is unable to attend conventions. Should this situation change I will happily announce it here.

He can still sign his name (in fact he was signing Kickstarter prints in the hospital!), and is otherwise pretty healthy and has good cognition. We expect to continue releasing signed prints, and offering occasional pieces of art for sale from the collection that remains. We both thank all of you for your continuing support and good wishes!

All our best,
Liz and Bernie Wrightson

via James Bulloch's fb page:
The fine folks at Dangerous Minds have done a nice little feature on one of my all time favorite artists and illustrators. The GREAT Virgil Finlay! To this day, Finlay's art has served as an ultimate inspiration to me since I first discovered his work many many (many) years ago, digging through my grandfathers weird tales and sic-fi magazines (f**k I wish I still had those) I distinctly remember getting lost in his art. The way he illustrated science fiction, fantasy and horror, had me completely captivated and lost in a world of wonder as a little kid. I had seen his artwork so many times previously to finding out who the man behind these absolutely amazing works of illustration was. It wasn't until I was 15 or 16 that I put all the clues together and really dove into Finlay's art. Although, a few of these examples are very bad jpegs of his art, it's not hard to marvel in this mans skill and insane imagination. Simply, one of the best ever and a true master of his craft.

Finlay’s cover for the May 1952 issue of Weird Tales Master of exquisitely detailed images that often combined the sexual and the scary, Virgil Finlay was born in Rochester, New York in 1914. He was a highly prolific commercial artist in the midcentury years — one commentator went so far as to call…
