Convergence-continuum

Convergence-continuum Cleveland's up-close cutting-edge theatre, located in the historic Tremont neighborhood. Most theatres are like mirrors, reflecting the familiar.

You go to a show, you sit, you watch a play, and then you go home. You watch the actors from across the chasm of a "fourth wall." Everything is nicely laid out for you as you view what is comfortably, safely beyond that wall, confident that you will be made, indeed are expected, to understand the experience in terms of conventional logic. Aren’t we all tired of that by now? What if theatre weren’t

a mirror reflecting the familiar, but an opening into unknown territory? What if there were no fourth wall? What if, instead of going to the theatre to watch a play, you crossed the threshold into the world of the play to experience it? Theatre that expands the imagination and extends the conventional boundaries of language, structure, space, and performance that challenges the conventional notions of what theatre is. What sort of theatre would this be? We are convergence-continuum. https://linktr.ee/convergencecontinuum

Director’s Notes-

It’s now. It’s later. It’s everything happening all at once in the center of a random hell. That’s when Plano takes place. That’s how this world can feel right now. I’ve had the play on my mind for a while, but this year of political turmoil felt like the correct time to do it. Plano follows three sisters in a Dallas neighborhood as they’re navigating … a lot—multiplying husbands, a slug infestation, a ghost without a face. The way the playwright, Will Arbery, presents their overwhelm is hilarious, devastating, and strangely comforting. The characters are overwhelmed by the world’s unfairness and all the changes they want to make at a personal and political level. I’m overwhelmed. I suspect you might be, too. This play invites us to confront it, talk about it, and maybe emerge a little more connected.
Arbery wrote this play for his family. As the only son in a family of seven daughters, he had a lot to dig into about how patriarchy affected them, how their parents (two professors at a Christian college) shaped their worldviews, and how they imperfectly tried to support each other through it all. A theme I keep coming back to is the way characters avoid their emotions, which ends up making them avoid each other. I’ve felt guilty for avoiding my feelings, too. And when that happens, life can speed on without you at a dizzying pace. It’s now. It’s later. It’s that time everyone needed your help and you weren’t there.
Have fun and laugh a bit. We’re in Plano together.

With joy despite it all,
Kari Barclay
