A thank you to everyone who has contributed to recouping my stolen tools. Much love.

Back in Pagan or Pre-Christian times, symbols and runes were inscribed in furniture, on homes, in places wherever people would work or rest their heads, to protect while sleeping or bring a good harvest or to bring love. I read about these in the wonderful book American Peasant by and wanted to inscribe them into some small usefuls. Just in time for winter, here are some bookmarks in black walnut with hand carved traditional Eastern European symbols. Make one a gift or buy one yourself to cozy up with your fantasy novels or thriller or Thoreau.

Available to purchase here and on my site whenever I figure out listing them via another platform. Cheers.

Planing down this beautiful cross-section of wormy maple with a . This piece was at our lumber suppliers during a supply run for a job and I resisted buying it...the first time. It was too cool to pass up. Not quite sure what I’ll do with it yet. The hole in the center was drilled to prevent radial cracking.

Some character in one of the legs from the curved benches I recently completed. I assume this was a burl. Mother Nature provides these wonderful “imperfections” whose beauty any artist would be hard pressed to duplicate, and which are often my favorite bits of the pieces I work on.

Detail of walnut & cherry benches I am finishing for a dining room set I am making. Had to strengthen a little weakness in the glue line at the end of one of the benches with this cherry butterfly. I love butterflies out of contrasting wood. More pics to come...

Hand-cut walnut in this maple slab that will soon be a headboard. Details like this are so gratifying to me as an artist and craftsperson. I try to learn something with every project. Forever a student.

My grandfather brought me into just over 2 years ago to start working. I had little to no skills, much less woodworking skills. I had traveled, bounced around from job to job as many disenchanted, aimless millennials do, partied too much, found little passion and fulfillment in life. I was very lost and miserable. Basically I needed a job, so I came in part time, working two other jobs to make ends meet. He retired shortly after I started, with Alex taking over the business (and teaching me basically all I know and putting up with quite a lot from me), leaving many of his tools at the shop.

I have used his chisels and his workbench, but the planes have been sitting atop the wall cabinet this whole time. Today, two years later, I am using his hand planes for the first time. For some reason, using the planes feels special.

I only have one job now, and it is being a furniture maker, albeit a young one. No more 20-hour days or having to ride the bus/metro in the dead of winter to work. I guess the planes are symbolic. Either way, here I am. This is my work, but it is not a job. I hope we all find that. It just might save you and fill your heart. Thanks for reading.

Got that drip. When pre-finishing the dozens of table legs for our most recent project you get some build-up on the edge of the cart. It dries like this and reminds me of the icicles that hang from snow-covered homes. Finding beauty in the odd little things.

Cut-outs from the red oak counter top I recently stained and finished - turned into butcher block cutting boards. Love the color and grain. Even in something as simple as a block of wood, the character can striking. Reducing waste from any project is always a positive.

This is the beautiful view of the countryside at one of our usual lumber suppliers. I always appreciate slowing down and taking the drive out to Amish country. Can’t complain when this gets to be a part of your workday.
