Meet board member Maureen Garnett, an engineer, former president of Rotary Club of Hillcrest Sunrise, and coach for the Orange High School (Ohio) robotics team for the past 10 years!

Why robotics?

Robotics has always been especially rewarding because it combines technology, creativity, and the arts. And this year, the team advanced to the playoffs at an event featuring more than 300 teams from around the world.

What do you enjoy outside of work and volunteering?

The arts, sports, reading, and nature. I also enjoy spending time with my mom and helping senior citizens in my family.

How has music been a part of your life?

Music has been an important part of my life for more than 30 years. I enjoy playing with local community groups, as well as listening to orchestras and other classical musicians. I like all types of music and enjoy finding inspiration in each of them. I’m drawn to composers who can capture the many different moods of music, and I continue to discover new ones each year. For me, there is something especially refreshing and focusing about that moment when a live performance begins and the music starts.

How did you learn of M.U.S.i.C.?

I first discovered it through a friend from the Cleveland Institute of Music who was involved with the organization and hosted concerts at her home. The opportunity to hear high-quality musicians in an intimate setting while supporting talented young musicians at the beginning of their careers is one of the special things about a chamber music concert. You experience wonderful music up close while helping emerging artists build their careers.

How did you first learn of M. U. S. i. C. - Stars in the Classics and what made you want to stay involved?

Meeting Jodi at an adult education French class was my entrée to M.U.S.I.C.! Before long, we were attending concerts, and shortly thereafter, Robert began working with the organization. I’ve enjoyed being part of M.U.S.I.C. ever since. I’m therefore especially grateful for the many opportunities I have to be a devoted listener, both through M.U.S.I.C. and beyond.

If you were convincing a friend who has never been to a chamber music concert to come to one of ours, what would you tell them?

I always speak highly of M.U.S.I.C., particularly the quality of the musicians, the convenience and accessibility of the venues, and the conviviality of the attendees.

Have you ever traveled to see a concert?

I’ve been very fortunate to attend concerts and operas in London, Berlin, Rome, and Vienna, as well as in many U.S. cities.

What music have you recently enjoyed?

After hearing Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons in Vienna, we attended Fidelio in Cleveland. We also enjoyed the two July concerts in Jodi & Steve's garden. I am looking forward to the upcoming Summer Musical Soirée.

How did you first learn of the organization?

My sons study double bass and cello, and my oldest son's bass teacher invited us to a Summer Garden Concert where he was performing. I immediately fell in love with the welcoming atmosphere, the variety of the programming, and how approachable both the music and the musicians were.

What inspired you to get involved?

It happened later at a Winter Salon concert. I was sitting near the back where I was able to watch the musicians coming and going between sets. After one performance, the vocalist returned backstage beaming, and another musician greeted her with an enthusiastic hug and congratulations. It was such a genuine moment of joy and encouragement. That experience perfectly captured M.U.S.i.C.'s commitment to supporting emerging musicians, and I knew I wanted to help sustain that mission.

What would you tell someone who'd never been to a chamber music concert?

If I were inviting someone, I'd say: forget whatever image comes to mind when you hear “classical music.” Chamber music isn't about knowing the right composers or understanding music theory. It's about being close enough to watch musicians communicate with each other in real time. You see the conversation happening through the music. It's intimate, powerful, and surprisingly accessible.
