We have an update for you regarding winter 2022 pottery classes.

There will be several openings in the Monday evening pottery classes. There are two sessions-the first with people arriving between 5 pm to 5:30 pm and the other section starting at 7:30 pm. Class time is two hours plus some additional time for set up and clean up. If there is anyone who needs closer in parking, generally speaking, there is more parking choices at about 5 pm. That class is also good for people who would like a smaller class, more personal attention. The 7:30 pm class also has several openings. Most likely, there will be 5 to 7 people in each class.

We will know more in another couple days regarding any openings in the Thursday evening class and Saturday morning class.

The registration form will be posted on December 15. Spaces are confirmed via completing the form and getting the payment in. We suggest dropping off checks/registration in the mail box located in the door way entry. Registrations are first come first served.

Please check back on the 15th of December for more details regarding class openings.

Here are some updates...

We do not yet have a winter quarter schedule. Hopefully by mid-December, we’ll have a schedule. Once we do, we’ll post the registration form to Facebook.

Winter quarter will continue with covid protocol (e.g., masks, smaller class sizes, staggered starts).

This weekend we are firing an octagonal kiln with the 4th load of glaze-firings. We will have 1 or 2 more loads to fire next week.

Glaze-firings are taking longer than normal because we're using an octagonal kiln instead of our large 15-cubic foot custom kiln. This is to reduce our electric bills that have increased considerably in recent months.

Our electric bills have increased considerably this fall because the Illuminating Company installed smart meters and the electric distribution costs are calculated differently. While our supplier charges (supplier rate multiplied by kilowatt hours) have not changed, the distribution charges (30-minute maximum kilowattage per billing period) have increased significantly.

To reduce the monthly 30-min max KW, instead of running the large kiln (with a very high 30-min max.), we've been using a small octagonal kiln and manually turning it off 2 minutes during every half hour. This requires co-op members to kiln-sit each firing for 12 hours, which is an incredible increase in the workload of the co-op members... as we didn't kiln-sit before.

After we get through the fall quarter firings, we’ll have to further investigate the increased electric costs and come up with a new plan for future firings.

Regardless of any such plan for future firings, are electric costs will be significantly higher than they ever had been. Since the co-op operates at-cost, the increased electric costs will have to be passed on to the students and co-op members. Student fees will be increased for winter quarter classes.

Finally, in November, Buckeye Ceramic Supply (Hilliard, OH) has terminated commercial operations at the former Ohio Ceramic Supply (Ravenna, OH). Ohio Ceramic Supply had terminated retail operations in 2020. We had bought clay/glaze from Ohio Ceramic Supply for many years. When retail operations ceased, we were able to buy clay/glaze from Buckeye Ceramic Supply and have it shipped to the former Ohio Ceramic Supply location. Now, we must either pick up clay/glaze at Buckeye Ceramic Supply or pay for third-party shipping. We’re not aware of any other clay/glaze supplier in northeast Ohio.

Winter quarter classes are tentatively scheduled to begin in the latter half of January. We'll release more information in December and January. With the pandemic, we'll have to wait and see how things go.

We currently have four openings for the Saturday morning pottery class: Attend 5 of 6 sessions July 17-August 21 and glaze on August 28. You may register by completing the registration form and then bringing the check and registration form to the mailbox for Cleveland Potter’s Co-Op, 3175 Kensington, Cleveland Heights. The class is two hours plus a 15 minute period for setting up and cleaning up. There will be staggered start times with some people coming in at 9:30 and some people coming in at 10 am. You may send the registration via US mail, but given the delays in mail, it may be best to drop by and put the registration and payment in the locked mail box. Slots will be filled in the order that registration forms are received.

Our Monday and Thursday Summer Session I classes are filled and there is wait list for Summer Session II (for both the Monday and Thursday class). We give preference to returning students. It is possible that there will be some schedule changes for class participants.

Winter quarter registration is open; the form is attached to this post. Registration is by hardcopy only.

A message from the co-op director:

Our winter 2021 class schedule will continue with adult classes on Monday evenings, Thursday evenings
and a Saturday morning class. Due to Covid 19 health precautions, we are limiting class size to
approximately half capacity. If we experience exceptionally high acuity for Covid 19, it is possible that
the class schedule would be delayed. We will follow all health guidelines such as wearing masks
(minimum of 2 ply, preferably 3 ply masks) that securely cover the nose and mouth. Specific Covid
studio processes will be outlined by the instructor.
Our current students have priority for any openings. We have 3 openings in the Saturday morning class
and we are wait listing 2 people each for the Monday and Thursday classes. Open class slots will be
filled based on submission of both the registration form and also payment for class. It is possible to
drop off checks/registrations in an envelope. The mail box is located outside on the building wall. We
will be checking the mail box regularly during the registration period.
Currently, we are not offering tutoring sessions. If Covid 19 infections stabilize, we will then consider
adding tutoring sessions. Currently, we are not offering children’s classes.

12/12/2020

We will be finalizing a schedule and registration form for the winter quarter next week. Classes will begin the 3rd week of January, pending covid.

The number of emails, Facebook messages, and calls we've received in the past 3 months is more than 10 times the number of students we can accept into our classes. We continue with our studio capacity reduced in half due to covid.

Registration will be via hardcopy. Seats will not be reserved via email, Facebook message, or phone call. Students will be registered by when their filled out registration form and payment are received at the studio.
