I spent five hours in armor today at Playcon: Gaming & Comic Con , a long stretch, but had a great time despite the armor bites and sore back. The Largo Recreation Center is where I teach two drawing classes every Tuesday.

I was back in my stormtrooper armor last night at the Threshers baseball game for Star Wars night, with almost 40 other people in costume. Five hours in armor, felt like two, making kids (and adults) smile. We got to watch the fireworks from the outfield, a very special perk, followed by drinks at the tiki bar beside the ball field. This was a truly great day.

Will affordable artist studios boost traffic at Tyrone Square Mall?

Tyrone Square Mall will officially turn 50 in October. And while it’s not a ghost town, exactly, the amount of retail shops, as well as the number of circulating customers, has dwindled significantly from the 1970s and ‘80s, when shopping was a nearly everyday activity, and “hanging out” at ...

Second day of substitute teaching, Montrose Elementary in St. Petersburg: so far so good, although I definitely have to go more full on drill sergeant. Once I did that, the 4th graders really started responding. I have a substitute teacher assistant who is really helping who knows the school as well.

This will make you laugh: walking them out of the building towards the physical education building, I was actually loudly calling out military walking cadence and oh, and the kids were just eating it up. "YER LEFT, YER LEFT, YER LEFT, YER LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT!" The gym teacher said, "Love it!" 😆

Today was my first foray into substitute teaching, shadowing a class at Sutherland Elementary School, with a lovely teacher named Mrs. Ingle, who teaches third grade. This is how my day went (spoiler alert: it was a great day):

The class just started a new book, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, and halfway through the morning, she invited me to show some of my drawings to the class via the overhead projector. This will sound egotistical, but it's true: the kids were astonished by some of the graphic novel pages in my sketch book. Then I was invited to draw the rabbit on the book cover, which I did in pen, with the kids drawing along. One of the students, Avery, drew a picture for me and gave it to me afterwards. How cool is that?

During lunch, I spotted some kids I used to cross at my corner when I was a crossing guard, and of course I had to go over and say hello. They asked me if I was going to be here from now on, and I promised them I would try. Later at recess, a couple of the girls asked me to draw a car on the asphalt with chalk, and I told them to draw their version of a car. At the end of the day, there was time for some of the kids to gather around while I drew the Disney Stitch character, which they had requested.

These kids were so well behaved and so adorable, and I had a really good time. Mrs. Ingle gave me her email address and said she would love for me to substitute for her whenever she is out, a suggestion that was met with extremely enthusiastic approval by the kids, lol. I think in one day they are growing on me already.

I definitely think I have found my new niche

In my Oldsmar drawing class tonight I introduced Lily and Edie to white charcoal pencils on black paper, something they have never seen before. They were fascinated. I love seeing my students discover something different.

Indeed has been sending me reminders of "exciting opportunities" for health care customer service positions, in-person, at a Tampa call center. I declined interest with the following explanation in the comments section:

"Having endured years in cubicle purgatory with my every movement tracked to the nanosecond by call center companies that demand loyalty but offer none in return, I would rather chew stale Brillo pads laced with arsenic in a dark box filled with snakes than spend another hour in a spirit-crushing, soul-deadening call center environment. Best wishes in finding the best wage slaves - er, I mean, candidates for this position. "

My drawing student Antonella is super proud of the comic she created. Andrew wants to draw comics like mine, and Austin discovered my pastels today. I have so much fun being their teacher; it's such a privilege to be able to do this. Hanging out with them is the highlight of my day.

A lively drawing class this morning; one of my young students drew this, describing him as someone who is "accidentally buff and accidentally tan". 😃

I asked, "Accidentally buff? I would LOVE to be accidentally buff! How does THAT work??"🤣

My wife yelled from the bedroom, "Do you ever get a shooting pain, like someone is stabbing a voodoo doll of you with a giant needle?"

I said, "No..."

She called back, "How about now?" 🤨
