There were big traffic issues with the first full night of Nights of Lights, and they had to close the park before everyone who bought a ticket got to enter. Dorothea Dix Park posted on Facebook that they are trying to make it a better experience going forward, and that you can request a refund here:

But please know that we've put together a HUGE list of Christmas light displays around the Triangle and many of these will not have a significant wait. Our list includes 8 ticketed attractions and 26 free ones. It's organized by town/county, and there's a Google map. Some of these are drive-thru events, some are homes with lights synchronized to music, and some are over-the-top static light displays.
