The clock is ticking…

Applications for the Wilmington Black Storytelling Residency (WBSR) are closing soon, and we are preparing to welcome our 5th cohort of powerful storytellers.

Presented in partnership with the City of Wilmington’s Office of Cultural Affairs, Cityfest, and our valued sponsors, this immersive seven-day residency is rooted in the belief that Black Storytelling is Black Joy—and a vital tool for shaping how we understand our past, present, and future.

🌿 2026 Theme:
Black Memory & Voice: Shaping America at 250

At this historic moment, we invite storytellers to explore how memory lives in the body, the archive, the kitchen, the sanctuary, and the street—and how voice continues to shape the American story.

✨ Stories in Focus: A Photo-Inspired Journey ✨

Today we launched Part One of our two-part Stories in Focus workshop series at the Brandywine Museum of Art. 📸📖

This immersive experience invites participants to explore how photographs can spark memory, meaning, and powerful personal narratives—transforming images into stories that speak from the heart. The energy in the room today was thoughtful, reflective, and deeply engaging, setting the tone for the journey ahead.

On this day, I honor my mother’s life and the love she poured into me. I am the artist I am today because she always told me every dream I ever had was possible.

Another powerful Wilmington Black Storytelling Residency (WBSR) in the books! 🙌🏾✨

Gratitude to my incredible Dream Team—Sister Dr. Caroliese Frink Reed and Emily Hooper Lansana ( )—for walking beside me on this journey once again. Together, we guided 15 gifted storytellers from across the country through an intensive week of study rooted in BlackStorytelling tradition.

These artists now return to their communities equipped not only with new tools, but with a charge—to be of service, to uplift, and to keep our sacred oral traditions alive. 💫🖤

WBSR is presented in partnership with Cityfest, Inc. and supported by Mayor John C. Carney’s Office of Cultural Affairs.
