What’s a Barn quilt you say? Well, it’s a piece of a quilt painted on a board, then attached to the side of a barn.
According to Art & Object, “During the Revolutionary War, barn quilts became symbols for American forces to locate areas where supplies, and even sleeping arrangements, were readily available. These wood blocks are also believed to have served a similar purpose during the Civil War, as freedom seekers used them— along with actual, fabric quilts hung on clotheslines and in window sills— to find places of safety and receive secret codes.
They aren’t made of fabric, which is good for me because I can not sew a straight line. Barn quilts are painted pictures of traditional quilt block patterns. Sometimes, they are specially designed blocks such as for a farm name, or farm product.
SO, if you ever wanted to make a quilt, and are sewing machine challenged as I am, here’s your chance. We’ll teach you how to make the grid, use painters tape to make straight lines and then paint those beautiful patterns. Ours, will be living room size, rather than barn size!!
