The Imperial Theatre-Mohawk, built in 1913. The theatre has been purchased and is in the early stages of renovation to return to "A stage for all reasons"

Built in 1913 and having a seating capacity of around 600. The theatre was a destination for vaudeville, live a

cts and silent films that were accompanied by live music. The theatre appears to have been on the cutting edge of construction techniques, using concrete and steel. The mission is to save the theatre from further deterioration, systematically rehabilitating its components in a green and energy-efficient manner, but in keeping with its historic features. The theatre will be restored to an active, multi-use community center for performing arts, film, diverse activities and events.

What a wonderful evening celebrating preservation, revitalization, and the people helping keep historic places alive across Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

ITMA Board Members, Jessica Tribbe and Julie Fay attended the 2026 Preservation Excellence Awards hosted by Cincinnati Preservation at the beautiful Woodward Theater on May 7. It was a night filled with architects, engineers, preservationists, developers, storytellers, and community advocates all united by a shared passion for saving meaningful historic spaces and giving them new life.

A highlight of the evening was hearing from host Honor Hook writer, singer, comedian, and enthusiastic supporter of preservation and the arts. And congratulations to Jessica, who won one of the evening’s big raffle baskets!

We also enjoyed seeing so many incredible projects and organizations recognized throughout the night, including work connected to Cincinnati’s historic theatre and cultural spaces.

Thank you to Cincinnati Preservation for a lovely evening and for continuing to champion the stories and structures that make our region unique.

Imperial Theatre history…

On May 6, 1936, the Imperial Theatre hosted a “Mohawk Amateur Show,” sponsored by the Mohawk Business Men’s Association. Local performers took the stage alongside a feature picture for what must have been a lively night in downtown Cincinnati.

We love uncovering these little newspaper moments because they remind us that the Imperial was never just a movie house, it was a gathering place for community talent, entertainment, and connection.

Imagine the excitement of stepping onto that stage in 1936. What amateur talent would you have showcased?

April 18, members of the Imperial Theatre Mohawk Alliance had the opportunity to attend CCM’s production of Sweeney Todd at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

This performance marked the culmination of a two-year collaboration led by our own Board Member and CCM’s Chair of Musical Theater, Vince DeGeorge and it did not disappoint.

We were proud to be in the audience alongside CCM Dean Peter Jutras, Opera Chair Amy Johnson, and conductor Ian Axness, celebrating the incredible work of students, faculty, and collaborators who brought this production to life.

Experiences like this remind us why the arts matter and why the work we’re doing at the Imperial is so important.

Congratulations to Vince and the entire CCM team on an extraordinary production!

As part of the National Main Street Conference, we toured the beautifully restored Coleman Theatre in Miami, Oklahoma.

Experiencing successful preservation projects firsthand offers invaluable perspective as we continue planning for the future of the Imperial Theatre. These spaces demonstrate the lasting impact of thoughtful investment in historic assets and community centered revitalization.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn, connect, and bring new ideas home.
