A prowl around the garden for Pumpkin’s twin (painted by Edie Harper) 🎃 Today the museum had a fuzzy special guest! Cincinnati’s Cutest Pet, Pumpkin, stopped by to explore the garden in search of her lookalike (named “Peepkin”) who she ended up finding at the front gates! This painting and many other kittens and critters will be on view in “Edie McKee Harper: Modernist at Play,” opening October 17. You can learn more and get tickets at taftmuseum.org/Edie

Thanks for coming to explore with us, Pumpkin!

COMING SOON! 🐈 "Edie McKee Harper: Modernist at Play" | On view October 17, 2026–January 24, 2027

Cincinnati artist Edie McKee Harper (American, 1922–2010) developed a distinctive modernist vision across a wide variety of media, including photographs, paintings, enamels, weavings, illustrations, and prints. Edie McKee Harper: Modernist at Play highlights Harper’s exploration of these diverse materials through more than 100 works of art, re-examining her minimalist—and often playful—style to reveal a sophisticated artist who expanded the possibilities of mid-20th-century art and design. Recent shows and publications have looked at Harper’s accomplishments in tandem with those of her husband, artist and illustrator Charley Harper (American, 1922–2007), but this will be the first museum exhibition, with accompanying catalogue, to closely study the full range of her work on its own terms. The show will trace the evolution of Harper’s 60-year-long career through themes she revisited often—the American landscape, abstraction, storytelling, and the animal world—revealing a creative life infused with wit, whimsy, and wonder.

This exhibition is organized by the Taft Museum of Art in partnership with the Charley and Edie Harper Art Studio.

Edie McKee Harper + Robert S. Duncanson + Orchestral Masterworks = 🤯🎶

Some of the world's greatest orchestral music and works of art collide, and Music Hall is the canvas. In 'JMR's Orchestral Canvas' on September 25-27, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra creates a unique experience pairing music from Gershwin, Respighi, Debussy and more, with visual projections of artwork that spill off the stage and surround the hall in light. Imagine Van Gogh’s "Starry Night", Monet’s "Water Lillies", Klimt’s "The Kiss", and in collaboration with the Taft Museum of Art, Robert S. Duncanson’s stunning murals and Edie McKee Harper’s "Crazy Cat on Crazy Quilt (Patches)", brought vividly to life through the sound of the Pops and the creative minds at Lightborne studios. A feast for the eyes and ears, this fusion of sound and art invites you to experience both in a brand-new way.
