Is anyone else out there obsessed with trees like I am?

I’m fascinated by everything about them—their forms, the way branches twist and intersect, dappled light moving through translucent leaves, and the constantly changing patterns of shadow.

And then there’s the sound. Leaves rustling in the wind has always brought me a sense of peace.

That feeling became the inspiration for my latest painting, “Look Up.”

I wanted to capture what happens when you stand beneath a tree and simply turn your attention upward. The strong structure of the trunk gives way to this incredible canopy of color, light, movement, and unexpected shapes.

Maybe that’s why I keep returning to trees in my work. They remind me how much beauty we can miss when we’re only looking straight ahead.

Where Hope Grows is about finding peace while still moving forward.

The mountains in the distance suggest the challenges and uncertainty we all encounter, while the river creates a quiet path through the landscape. Feeding that river is a waterfall tucked into the distance—easy to overlook, but essential to everything that continues downstream. For me, it represents those quiet sources of strength, grace, and encouragement that sustain us, even when we don’t always recognize them.

In the foreground, wildflowers rise toward the light, reminders that beauty and hope can take root even after difficult seasons.

I wanted this painting to feel like a place where you could exhale. A place where the noise becomes distant, the path ahead feels a little clearer, and you’re reminded that something beautiful may still be waiting beyond what you can see.

Hope isn’t always something dramatic or immediately visible. Sometimes it is the unseen thing that keeps feeding us. The quiet strength that carries us forward. The small decision to keep going, remain open, and trust that peace can still be found along the way.

And sometimes, that is exactly where hope grows.

For the past few months, I’ve been seeing these symbols in my mind.

I’m not sure where they’re coming from. They would simply appear—shapes, lines, forms—and eventually I felt like I needed to stop questioning them and get them onto the canvas.

So I did.

As I worked, it felt less like I was deliberately creating the symbols and more like I was allowing something to come through me. Maybe they’re coming from somewhere deep within my subconscious. Maybe there’s a spiritual connection. Maybe they’re signals from something beyond what I understand.

Who knows?

What I do know is that they kept asking to be expressed. And this painting is where they finally found a place to exist.

I’m calling it “Signals.”

Sometimes I think the artist’s job isn’t to understand everything that comes through. Sometimes it’s simply to pay attention—and create.

I came across this painting of Mt. Fuji that I created back in 2021, and it made me smile. Looking at it beside the mountain scene that's currently on my easel is a reminder of how much can change when you simply keep showing up.

I really do think being an artist is less about talent and more about practice.

Every painting teaches something. Some lessons are about color or composition. Others are about patience, confidence, or learning to trust your instincts. None of that happens overnight—it happens one brushstroke at a time.

When I look at these two paintings, I don't just see different techniques. I see years of learning, experimenting, making mistakes, and refusing to stop creating.

There's still so much I want to learn, and that's one of the things I love most about this journey.

I'm excited to share my newest completed painting, Paper Wings.

Unlike many of my pieces, this one began without a plan. I didn't set out to paint butterflies or even tell a specific story. I simply started creating and allowed the painting to evolve one decision at a time.

As the abstract forms developed, I became drawn to their resemblance to folded paper. There was something compelling about their structure and movement, but the painting still felt incomplete. It needed another voice in the conversation.

That's when I introduced the butterflies.

The finished piece became what I think of as a mixed-reality painting—part abstract exploration, part realism. The contrast between the two creates a tension that I didn't fully understand while painting, but recognize now.

Looking back, I think Paper Wings reflects some of my own insecurities about transformation and identity.

For most of my life, I was known as a technologist. It became the role people associated with me and, in many ways, the role I associated with myself. Technology was an important part of my journey, but it was never the whole story.

Choosing to pursue art more fully has meant stepping beyond that familiar identity and embracing a part of myself that has always been present, even when it wasn't visible to others. That transition has been exciting, meaningful, and at times fragile.

Paper can tear. It can wrinkle. It can seem temporary.

But folded in the right way, it can also become something capable of flight.

The butterflies became a symbol of that transformation—not becoming someone new, but finally allowing myself to become someone more complete.

Every painting teaches me something. This one reminded me that growth often begins long before we're ready to acknowledge it.

I’m often asked what “the dream” is when it comes to my art career.

For me, the dream has never been only about selling my own paintings or building my own name as an artist. The bigger dream is Humble Origins Art Studio — a Cincinnati-based working studio, gallery, and creative space where local artists can be discovered, supported, and given room to grow.

Cincinnati has such a rich creative spirit, but many emerging artists still struggle to find affordable space, visibility, and opportunities to connect with collectors and the community. Humble Origins is being created to help change that.

The vision is to build a welcoming space where Cincinnati-area artists can work, exhibit, sell their art, host events, and grow from their own humble beginnings.

The new Humble Origins Art Studio donation website has officially launched, and every contribution helps bring this dream closer to becoming a real physical space here in Cincinnati.

Your support will help with early launch needs like securing studio/gallery space, creating working artist areas, preparing a welcoming gallery environment, supporting local art events, and building a place where Cincinnati artists can be seen and celebrated.

“Paper Wings” — almost finished, but close enough that I felt ready to share it.

This piece pulled from a feeling I think a lot of us know well… working hard at something, pushing upward, trying to become more — only to sometimes feel like you can only get so high before the sun burns your wings. At the same time, butterflies have always felt like symbols of transformation to me. Fragile, but determined. Temporary, but powerful.

I honestly don’t know if this painting will resonate with anyone else out there, but I was compelled to create it anyway. Sometimes the artist spirit speaks, and you don’t always understand why something needs to exist — it just spills out of you and asks to be painted.

Maybe this one is about ambition. Maybe healing. Maybe reinvention. Maybe all of it at once.

“Whispers on the Water” has already found its new home after only a few days of being shared, and I’m genuinely thrilled.

This piece meant a lot to me, so it’s always special to know a painting connected with someone so quickly and deeply enough to become part of their space.
