During my time in prayer this morning the Lord showed me something. In a quick vision I saw a carpet hanging up on its side. I was pouring vinegar onto it and as I did, all the dirt and grime that was on this carpet started flowing downward toward the ground, but instead of a clean, white carpet left behind, what was once fibers turned into white silk-like fabric--smooth and flowy. Brilliant colors started appearing on the fabric. What I heard at this moment was, "What you once walked on, you will now wave as a banner."
In my efforts to try to understand what it was that He was showing me, I started breaking it down. What is a carpet? A carpet/rug is something that you walk on that softens your steps and protects your feet from the bare elements (stones, mud, etc). A carpet also traps dirt and residue from your feet and prevents it from being traipsed into other areas of your home.
What is a banner? A banner displays, announces and identifies. Banners are meant to be seen; they draw our attention and serve as a beacon of direction and/or hope.
What is vinegar representative of? Vinegar is acidic; it represents bitterness and unpleasantness but because it is so highly acidic, it is great for cleaning because it breaks down dirt and grime, though it has a very pungent odor.
So what I see happening in this vision is the taking of something that is usually seen as common and overlooked-especially since it was dirty--something that was no longer useful because of its wear and tear--and repurposing it. Cleaning it up, transforming it into something that is now "meant" to be seen and heralded. What was once seen as common and easily overlooked will now be appreciated as a thing of beauty and honor. And once the dirt and grime are broken down, it can then be washed in water that leaves no trace of the bitterness and acidity that was used to make it pure. This transformation only came about through the process of unpleasantness, but that was necessary to break down the grime and dirt that were so deeply attached to the fibers.
Here's the kicker, though:
The thing about the carpet is that it was MY feet that tracked in all the dirt and grime. Because I didn't esteem it important enough to take care of it, I never removed my shoes--I'm the one who took advantage of it and made it common. I ALLOWED it to get to that state!
So that leads me to think, what has the Lord provided for you that you did not regard as special, but treated it as common? What have you walked all over without giving it a second thought? What does the Lord want to revive in your life and give renewed purpose to?
"Father, I thank You for showing me the areas in my life that I have taken for granted and have yet to be surrendered and purified through the washing of Your Word. Forgive me for taking something that You provided to me for protection and beauty, and treating it as something common. Thank You for providing a way for it to be cleansed and restored for a renewed purpose in You. Teach me how to steward Your Kingdom, how to do it well, and with honor. In Jesus' Name, amen!"
