A few years ago, we took family on a fly-in bear viewing trip. Mr. Northern Swan Creations brought along his big fancy camera and captured, among so many other bear pictures, this grizzly sow with her three cubs trailing behind her.

I’ve always loved this photo and decided to turn part of that encounter into a little watercolor.

Rather than painting the whole scene, I focused on Mom.

The result is this tiny 2.5 x 3.5” original watercolor — just about trading-card size. This little size is actually a popular standard art size, which means there are lots of fun options for framing and displaying her.

I love supporting other artists, and apparently I’ve been doing a little shopping. 😂

These two bookmarks came from two different artists, and I couldn’t resist either one. Birds, hiking, beautiful artwork—and my growing fascination with linocut prints? I really didn’t stand a chance.

I do not need another hobby.

We went on our last camping trip of the year and sadly, the RV is empty & winterized. 😭

Our summer has just been horrible, and maybe it’s because I’m grumpy over having to call summer over that I got so much attitude in these eagles. 😂

The watercolor ground on the wood ornament slices is a no-go. I am not happy with the eagle on the right. I was actually beginning to feel like I forgot how to paint with watercolor. Then I pulled out a 4 x 6 pad and whipped out the guy on the left!

I guess my next test is painting him on an ornament-sized circle. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well… this project is definitely not going where I originally planned. 😂But I think it might actually be going somewhere...

Today’s episode of I have an idea… now I have to figure out how to make it work. 😆

I’m experimenting with watercolor ground on wood slices for hand-painted ornaments. The six white ones are ready for watercolor, and the three at the bottom are my latest experiment — transparent watercolor ground first, to see if I can get a smoother surface before adding the white.

Because apparently just painting the ornaments would have been too straightforward. 😂

This little project has had so many twists and turns. 😂

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned with art is: if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

I saw an idea I loved and thought, “I want to try that!” Well… I think this is attempt number three. 😆

That greenish board at the top of first image?? That was mistake #1. I attempted to fix it and start fresh, but the sanding removed not only the paper…it also went right through the wood laminate. Whoops. 😂

So, another attempt.

This time, instead of fighting all the things that went wrong with this failed attempt, I’m embracing them—the torn paper, rough edges, unexpected texture and all—and moving forward.

Sometimes the problems become part of the art.

We’ll see where this one goes. 😊
