Bleeding Silence— acrylic mixed media on 18in x 24 in canvas paper.
This piece was a commission, and I’m so grateful I was just told to go for it and do whatever I wanted.
It started as just a simple face. I thought I’d just use a palette knife to get some texture going, but the more I worked, the more it felt like it needed to go deeper than that. It turned into this whole world of emotions that I hadn’t planned on. I just kept pushing the paint around until the eyes actually started talking back to me.
I didn’t have much time to get this done, but I couldn’t bring myself to rush it. It had to be right.

Throwback Thursday!

to 2018…

I remember walking into class that day with a lot on my mind. Nothing felt clear. I had this old canvas with layers from two paintings that didn’t work out, just lying around. I picked it up without much thought and started sketching… not to create something great, but just to feel a little lighter.

And slowly, something began to happen.

The face started forming on its own. I wasn’t forcing it. I wasn’t judging it. I was just there with it. And somewhere along the way, my mind quieted down. The messy strokes, the slightly odd features, the whole unplanned feel of it—it actually made me smile.

It felt like I could breathe again.

I’ve never been able to let this piece go. It reminds me of that version of me who was unsure, but still showed up and created anyway. There’s something very honest about it.

Whenever I look at it now, it feels like that one friend we all have—the one who doesn’t try to fix things, but just being around them makes everything feel okay. Real, simple, and comforting in their own way.

This painting has stayed with me… because it held me together when I needed it most.

Even when it’s quiet, my mind won’t shut up.
Ideas keep moving, piling up, turning into images before I ask them to. I can make entire paintings in my head without touching a brush.

I started this after a long day, already drained. I told myself I’d just begin—nothing serious. But once the first colors went down, I was stuck. One mark needed another. Then another. I couldn’t walk away. It felt like the painting had me, not the other way around.

This is how I live. Tired, but still imagining. Quiet on the outside, loud inside.
This painting is what that feels like.

“The Colors Stayed” mixed media on 40in x 52in stretched canvas.
Sometimes you just have to let go and trust the process—this time, I let the paintbrush take over. From the first layer of magazine stripes to the final cardboard blocks, I had no idea how this piece would turn out. It started in a different orientation with a simple idea, but it didn’t stay there.
The work kept asking for more depth and complexity, pushing me beyond basic layers of texture and paint. There was a moment when I stood still, brush in hand, realizing there was nothing more to add—only to step back and let the piece be what it wanted to become.
I love a challenge, and this one truly tested me.
