The Butcher Shop

The Butcher Shop Annual free outdoor theatre festival produced by Slow Theatre. Happens Labor Day weekend in Chico, C www.slowtheatre.com

The Butcher Shop was conceived in 1989 as a gathering of Chico's homegrown theatrical and musical talent. The first five productions took place in a Chico back yard, and from these efforts the Blue Room Theatre was born. After a 15 year hiatus, most of the original players, now hailing from far flung locales such as Los Angeles, New York and Portland, reunited in 2009 and combined with fresh Chico

talent to produce the current Butcher Shop (now produced by Slow Theatre. Beginning at dusk on the Saturday and Sunday evenings of Labor Day weekend, original plays are interspersed with songs from a rockin' live band, dance and tableau. All of this magically occurs in an almond orchard at the edge of town, attracting around 1500 participants each year.

We've still got a limited number of spaces available for our Drive-In premiere of Garage Fest 2020: Freedom of Speech, tonight and tomorrow at 8:00pm. Join us in a safely distanced setting for filmed speeches and monologues projected onto a 20x30ft screen, and enjoy live entertainment between filmed segments -- all centered on the theme of "Freedom of Speech." We're transforming our drive-in theatre to an underground political rally, where we get to redefine our communities and our causes.

The revolution starts in less than eight hours.

To all of our Butcher Shop 2020: The Social Contract viewers...

Unfortunately, technology won out on us this evening. While our in-person screening has been going amazingly, our online debut for tonight has hit one too many speed bumps. For that reason, we will have to postpone tonight's screening and be back with you tomorrow, September 6th at 8:00pm (on the dot this time) on Facebook Live and 8:15pm on YouTube Live. We don't want to keep you waiting indefinitely this evening. We will get a Facebook Live and YouTube Live link out to you ASAP, so you can get a reminder when it's showtime.

We apologize for the inconvenience and will have this down for tomorrow's screening. Welcome to the digital age! Thanks for your patience and your grace. We will see you tomorrow!

What have you got planned this weekend? We're gearing up for Butcher Shop 2020: The Social Contract, and we can't wait!

"Chico might need the Butcher Shop now more than ever, and even though we can’t gather in an orchard-side meadow in person this year, the show is still happening. Slow Theatre is producing pre-recorded videos of the various segments and will be debuting the show Sept. 5 and Sept. 6, at 8 p.m., on their page and YouTube channel. Plus, at the same days and times, there will be a socially distanced drive-in movie screening of the show (tickets $25; follow Slow Theatre on Facebook for location info)."

Thank you, Jason Cassidy and the Chico News & Review for celebrating The Butcher Shop with us. It all starts this Saturday.
