Tamara Murphy discussing her Tensegrity pieces at the opening reception of ‘Precious & Intelligent Self Contained Multitudes’ on Friday.

These pieces are held together entirely by string tension—no glue, no central rod. Like the earth from which the clay material was dug, they are both incredibly strong and dangerously precarious.

The exhibition is on view now until January 8th.

“Functionality is an ethical choice—a decision to prioritize the energy used in creating an object that is as useful as it is beautiful.”

This statement from Tamara Murphy (), whose solo exhibition opens this Friday, reminds us of the equal importance of everyday utilitarian objects and fantastical art objects (and that sometimes they’re the same thing).

Please join us for the opening reception at 1078 Gallery on Friday December 2nd from 5-7pm.

1078 here, reminding you that we are a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers who donate their time and labor to cultivate a space for contemporary and experimental artwork in our community. None of us take salaries and we receive no public funding.

So today, on Giving Tuesday, we’re asking you to help us keep going. Follow the link in our bio to make a quick one-time donation. You can also become a member or sign up for monthly donations, if you’re feeling extra generous.

Thank you for your support, Chico. We love you and we’re grateful that you love us back. 🧡

Souvenirs from our current exhibition of work by Shirin Towfiq ().

The image on the candles is a quote written in Persian calligraphy, from the Bahá’í writings of Baha’u’llah, that reads: “Plant naught but the rose of love in the garden of thy heart.”

This is the last weekend to view the show, and to purchase one of these souvenirs.

Sadaf Special Blend with Cardamom tea bags and gold thread

On view as part of our current exhibition of Towfiq’s work of the same name, Looking For A Sign, which runs until November 27th.

Shirin Towfiq, “Thinking About Migration,” digital prints on gauze. On view as part of her upcoming exhibition, Looking for A Sign, opening this Friday, November 4th from 5–7pm.

“Thinking About Migration are prints of Persian rugs on gauze fabric. They blow and turn gently like ethereal spirits from a fan placed in the corner of the room that personifies the imagination of magic carpets. In old Persian stories magic carpets are woven with magic threads that are able to transport anyone to anywhere in the world instantly. The rugs and their delicate gauzy materiality suggest bodies of Iranian migrants and the precarity of migration. Their delicate motion and scale creates an ambivalent sensation—simultaneously of overwhelming vulnerability and loss while suggesting a calm freedom swaying easily in the wind. As the wind continues to blow on these rugs the gauze ever so slowly begins to unravel itself when they move.”

Towfiq will hold an artist’s talk at CSU Chico as part of the Hopper Visiting Artists series TOMORROW, Thursday, November 3 at 5:30pm in the ARTS Recital Hall in the Arts and Humanities Building (101 Normal Avenue, Room 150). This event is free to attend!

We’re delighted to share our upcoming exhibition, Biopoiesis, with work by artist Zen Du.

The artist’s reception will be held Saturday, October 8th from 5-8pm. The show will run from October 7 through 30, 2022.

Zen Du received her MFA from SFAI, San Francisco, CA, her BFA from ASU, Boone, NC, and her Bachelor of Linguistics from VSU, Voronezh, Russia. Zen has been engaged in art making all her life. Trained as a classical painter during her stay in Russia, she was introduced to abstract painting when she moved to the US. Painting has been a means for her to explore immanent information that goes beyond limitations of language and conventional logic. The study of unconscious impulses and the exploration of authentic qualities of materials have been stimulating her interdisciplinary approach to art making and led to her desire to create environments or sequences of artworks rather than individual artworks. Zen makes sculptures, installations, paintings, textile designs, and utilizes found objects.

In recent years, Zen’s interests have concentrated on the recognition of the ordinary dignity rooted in practices permeating people’s daily life. Zen’s work emerges from her interest in rewriting the narrative of passive cultural consumerism. In her visual creative practice, she utilizes irony to undermine the existing causal processes, and abstraction to strip off iconic elements of culture from its fabricated value by assigning it a new unequivocal beauty. She believes that there is no uniform accessibility of objects of any kind, no matter how ordinary they may seem, and that art’s primary occupation is to evade the knowing grasp.

We hope you can join is this Saturday evening to view Zen Du’s collective work.

We are ecstatic to share our next exhibition: Chikoko presents “pod”, an interactive primordial installation of fiber/textile art.

Abstracted themes of the beauty of solitude, the shared grief of isolation and the nod to transition from stasis are explored. Audiences are invited to participate in a journey through a familiar jungle like landscape with unrecognizable specimens. Pods unfold to reveal mysterious interiors to visitors.

“pod” will be on view at 1078 Gallery from June 3 through July 3, with an artist's reception held on Friday, June 24 from 6–8pm.

We hope to see you there! Please share this post if you’re able to help us with that ever-elusive engagement.

“What [Sherri Scott, owner of Harvests & Habitats] loves most about plants, though, especially edibles, is their capacity to create cultural connections, to bridge differences, and to serve as ambassadors that can tie us together as a community.”

Closing reception will be held this Friday March 25th from 6-8pm. We hope to see you there!

“Life is a journey made of winding roads. For some of us we perceive the spiritual interactions within the physical. People lose themselves yet you can still see the light within them. The soul is still impacted. The simplest things such as words from a child, interactions with an animal, understanding of betrayal, or the knowledge of the long road ahead make an impact which pushes us forward. “After shaving her head of long hair for the performance piece “Do I Look Fine Now?” last year—a sacrifice done in the name of making a point about our stereotypes of what disabled people should look like—the artist examines the sacrifice and the martyrdom required for many artists (especially women and POC) that seems obligatory in the art world today.”

I would like to participate in this “print party” but all Mondays are out for me. Maybe you will have one another time?
Hive mind! Help? I got this sticker from an artist who was showcased during a punk show at 1078. People always compliment it and I'd love to see more of her work. Do you know who the artist is?
Keeping it WEIRD. 🤖
I just discovered the number 107. I was using God's numerical value which is 26.G+O+D=26. And I added it together with Yahweh. And came to 107. I thought of course one is creation, 7 is divine completion, and zero is Earth. But I spelled Yahweh wrong.Lol. and discovered the number anyway. Which goes to show you, no matter where you end up, that's where you're supposed to be. But I took it further.1, being origins.7,being Divine Completion. And 0, being Earth.8, the Single Cell divides to become Infinite.1078= Life Perpetual. Wherever you find an ending, you will also find a beginning. I like the artwork.
