We’re pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition: ‘A Westerly Direction’ with work by Christian Laney-Clark ().

Laney-Clark, a multimedia artist and clothing designer, provides a progressive version of the iconic American cowboy. His collection in A Westerly Direction is an homage to the past, an ode to the present, and a glimpse into the future. Crafted with beads, paint, dye, and quilting techniques, the shirts transcend fashion to become wearable art. Also available are a limited series of beaded chore coats and a line of ready-to-wear snap shirts.

The artist’s reception will be held Friday, December 1st from 6-8p
The exhibition will be on view until December 31st. Note: on Dec. 24 and 31, the gallery will close at noon
Artist's Reception: Friday December 1, 6-8pm.

1078 Gallery needs you!!!

We’re looking for a new volunteer to take over our social media. This includes Instagram and Facebook, and we’re open to expanding onto TikTok and others if you’re up for it.

Skills required: familiarity with social media platforms, basic graphic design, basic photography, being very nice and mildly professional.

We know this is a big job, especially for a volunteer position, so we’re open to bringing on more than one person to form a little social media team.

If you’re interested, send us a brief statement of interest to [email protected]. Please feel free to include some samples of your work or links to social media profiles so we can see what you do!

Please share and tag a friend you think might be interested.

••••••••••••••••

P.S.: As the social media manager for the past 2.5 years, it’s so bittersweet to leave the gallery as I pursue my teaching career. I love the 1078 folks so much, and it’s been a great joy and pleasure to make these silly little posts. Thank you all! 🙂❤️, Mattie

Hey Chico! ☀️

Do you love art? Do you love talking about art? Do you love sitting in a sunny window and the smell of coffee? Then we need you!

1078 Gallery is looking for volunteer gallery sitters to greet visitors, chat about the art, and assist with sales if needed. You could also work special events like opening receptions.

Our regular Gallery Sitter shifts are Fridays through Sundays, with two time slots: 10am-12pm and 12pm-2pm. (We're looking to open on Thursdays too, pending volunteer availability.) You can work set days (every Saturday morning, for example), or just one day a month. You could sign up for one day, see if you like it, and sign up for more shifts later if you like.

If you’re interested, email us at [email protected] with “Gallery Sitter” in the subject line and tell us a little bit about yourself. Please include your availability!

1078 Gallery is entirely volunteer run! Join us and be a part of the thriving Chico art community! 💛💛💛

There is an interesting relationship between this large, multilayered handmade paper work by Delaney Cox and the smaller paper sheets. While the wall piece, titled Prehistoria, is more substantial in scale and heft, it feels more fragile than the single sheets, which are easily held in the hand.

What does this relationship of size and fragility, of beauty and function, show us about the relationship between nature and people?

Prehistoria, Delaney Cox (). Handmade paper, soy, and wax.

Handmade paper sheets for sale (for just $10 each!).

1078 is open today (Sunday) from 10am-2pm.

RESCHEDULED! 🌸⛈️

We’re overjoyed that Sadie Dupuis is able to come to Chico despite winter storms impeding her original date. So re-mark your calendars for this very special event!

Prolific musician and poet Sadie Dupuis () will share poems from her second book, Cry Perfume ().

During the isolation of the pandemic, Dupuis compiled and edited four years’ worth of poems she’d written on the road touring with her band Speedy Ortiz. The result is Cry Perfume: a stunning new collection of poetry about beauty, mourning and music.

Cry Perfume landed on best of year end lists for fellow indie booksellers including Two Dollar Radio + Rough Trade. It received a stellar Publisher's Weekly review, was lauded by Pitchfork and came with advance praise from Hanif Abdurraqib, Eileen Myles, and Steven Malkmus of Pavement.

Local poet Alondra Adame () joins Sadie for this reading. Alondra is a Chicanx poet and essayist from Northern California. You can find their work in Pleiades, Lost Balloon, Alebrijes Review, The Nasiona, and more. They are currently working on a collection of poems exploring space, place, and identity. Follow Alondra on Twitter: alondrathepoet.

We’re so honored to share that Sadie Dupuis () is bringing her book tour to Chico!

Dupuis will be reading from her book of poetry Cry Perfume on March 4th at 1078 Gallery. Mark your calendars!

“The slick performativity of pop, punk humor, electronic glitch and sampling, and the surprising leaps of improvisation influence these poems, but beyond music, these poems are informed by Dupuis’s larger concerns about justice and organizing. Cry Perfume is a hopeful but realistic inventory of the virtues and evils that emerge when arts and tech collide. Those dualities are cloaked in the same sparkling fragrance, and there are twinned pleasures and regrets in parting the smokescreen.”

Tamara Murphy discussing her Tensegrity pieces at the opening reception of ‘Precious & Intelligent Self Contained Multitudes’ on Friday.

These pieces are held together entirely by string tension—no glue, no central rod. Like the earth from which the clay material was dug, they are both incredibly strong and dangerously precarious.

“Functionality is an ethical choice—a decision to prioritize the energy used in creating an object that is as useful as it is beautiful.”

This statement from Tamara Murphy (), whose solo exhibition opens this Friday, reminds us of the equal importance of everyday utilitarian objects and fantastical art objects (and that sometimes they’re the same thing).

Please join us for the opening reception at 1078 Gallery on Friday December 2nd from 5-7pm.

Souvenirs from our current exhibition of work by Shirin Towfiq ().

The image on the candles is a quote written in Persian calligraphy, from the Bahá’í writings of Baha’u’llah, that reads: “Plant naught but the rose of love in the garden of thy heart.”

This is the last weekend to view the show, and to purchase one of these souvenirs.

Shirin Towfiq, “Thinking About Migration,” digital prints on gauze. On view as part of her upcoming exhibition, Looking for A Sign, opening this Friday, November 4th from 5–7pm.

“Thinking About Migration are prints of Persian rugs on gauze fabric. They blow and turn gently like ethereal spirits from a fan placed in the corner of the room that personifies the imagination of magic carpets. In old Persian stories magic carpets are woven with magic threads that are able to transport anyone to anywhere in the world instantly. The rugs and their delicate gauzy materiality suggest bodies of Iranian migrants and the precarity of migration. Their delicate motion and scale creates an ambivalent sensation—simultaneously of overwhelming vulnerability and loss while suggesting a calm freedom swaying easily in the wind. As the wind continues to blow on these rugs the gauze ever so slowly begins to unravel itself when they move.”

Towfiq will hold an artist’s talk at CSU Chico as part of the Hopper Visiting Artists series TOMORROW, Thursday, November 3 at 5:30pm in the ARTS Recital Hall in the Arts and Humanities Building (101 Normal Avenue, Room 150). This event is free to attend!
