Spencer Diaz Tootle enjoys making props, plays and people squirm. She’s a Governing Ensemble member with and one half of the producing duo which platforms q***r Latine talent here in Chicago. She’s a Libra Sun, Aries moon, Capricorn rising - and if you want to read a full bio, come to the show. Spencer says: All of the characters in this play are so compelling. I can find pieces of myself in each of them, whether I like it or not! Something I find refreshingly resonant is Marilyn’s experience of feeling strangled by the beauty standard in our NASTY (racist, ageist, misogynist, ableist, transphobic, etc) society, even as she is an active arbiter of her own experience: melding herself to both meet and define that standard. Does she have agency or doesn’t she? Being made to feel like a hyper-visible object who WILL be chewed up and eventually spat out (hello to my gray hair), while also holding the knowledge that I’m a conventionally ~beautiful person who experiences looks-based privileges in this twisted world is a double-edged sword I’ve been unfortunately grappling with since puberty (and really, before that). Terry explores this tension with visceral clarity. When do I ENJOY the competition of the beauty standard? 🤢 When am I perceived against my will? When am I on some bu****it? Yes I’m comparing myself to Marilyn Monroe - but more importantly to Alexis Ward who is acting DOWN. Which brings me to the next question: What am I most excited about besides props? THE PERFORMANCES!! These actors are fierce beyond belief and I am so thrilled to witness their brilliance as they bring this story to thrilling, dizzying, sparkling life!!!!! Every single designer is also a genius (like, literally it’s so gaggy) and our stage management team is graceful and sharp and perfect. Projects like THIS are why I’m a theatre maker 🥲
