Cold wax medium is a beeswax medium that’s mixed 1:1 with oil paint. It creates amazing surfaces that you can dig into to create lots of marks and crevices.

I use this process when I start working on a landscape as it provides a baseline for composition as I work. I loooove this technique. It is as really satisfying to do as it is to watch. 😍

Cold wax works in layers. The initial layer I put down was a vibrant red and I’m able to scrape into the wax to reveal the bottom layer color.

The wax, once dry, will retain the crevices, valleys, scrapes, and marks and enables a dynamic and energetic work of art.

I use this process when I start working on a landscape as it provides a baseline for composition as I work. Most of these lines end up getting blended out as the wax is worked and new colors and dimensions are added.

Cold wax works in layers. The initial layer I put down was a vibrant red, and then with the blue on top, I’m able to scrape into the wax to reveal the underneath color.

I had an open studio tonight for Fulton Street Collective’s opening weekend of Chicago themed work. It was a great night!

I got more work done on this massive oil painting. There’s a lot of layers in this one, even a little cold wax was used for texture throughout. I’m liking where this one is going!

⚡️“Electric Dreams” really delivers on its name with the help of a black light. I used Liquitex’s fluorescent acrylic markers for a lot of the line work in this piece. It didn’t even occur to me until recently that it probably glows in the dark so I brought out the black light to test the theory.

And to my absolute delight, IT DOES!! It ⚡️GLOWS⚡️!

This piece stands on its own regardless. It’s highly textured and layered. I used a lot of heavy body medium with acrylic to give this piece lots of character.

People have shared that this style reminds them of pixelated landscapes of older video games. Almost like the worlds that build themselves as you move around.

I named this piece “Electric Dreams” because it reminds me of a dreamscape that isn’t quite formed but it’s active and ever-changing as your eyes move across the piece.
