The Impostors Theatre Company

The Impostors Theatre Company Turn off your nightlights and put on your masks. Let’s embrace the Art of Pretend. The Impostors Theatre Company was founded in the spring of 2016.

This artistic collaboration, that already spanned six years, had not been enough. There were more stories to tell, more worlds to explore. Living rooms in Chicago apartments became coves of collaboration. A cottage tucked high between lake and forest became a writer’s oasis. Thirteen artists became thirteen accomplices in a big game of make-believe, looking to make our stories a reality.

A few more seedlings from last Saturday’s celebratory evening of giving! It’s been just over a week since we gathered in our Perennial garden and welcomed the start of Season Eight.

We have just one week left to reach our fundraising goal. Lend us a sprinkle from your watering can? 💦

We ended last week with $13,280 toward our goal—a mere $2K shy of our TOP TIER goal of $15K! Thanks to the immense generosity of our Accomplices, Season Eight has officially taken root and is sprouting. 🌱

There’s still plenty of tending to do before our garden BLOOMS. Help us cultivate the next chapter of The Impostors by visiting the link below by September 13th. 💐

A few clippings from Saturday’s evening of giving (and partying)!

A sincere “thank you” to everyone who danced in the garden with us at Perennial. Your commitment, contributions, and encouragement have watered the soil from which the stories of SEASON EIGHT will grow.

As an arts nonprofit, we rely on accomplices like you to keep the lights on and the stories told. By the end of Saturday’s celebration, we raised a total of $9,500 [!!!] This means, because of your support and generosity, we are now 75% of the way toward our first-tier goal of $13K!!!

Our PERENNIAL campaign will remain open through mid-September. We have two weeks left to:

🌱 Sprout ($13K)🌿 Bud ($14K)🌸 Bloom ($15K)

These goals aren’t arbitrary; they’ve been tended with careful intention to ensure we can continue operating at the high standard we’ve worked so hard to establish.

Help us cultivate the future season of embracing the art of pretend. Our donation portal can be found at the link in our bio. Every seedling planted helps our garden blossom.

Excited to see what stories are just beneath the surface? Return here tomorrow to find out. 🌱

🌹What does it mean for a flower to be perennial?🌷

“To return repeatedly” or “to last a very long time” is to be perennial. Now entering our eighth season, it is The Impostors’ hope that our place in the Chicago theatre community will embody both definitions—and do so with flourish.

Perennial (August 29th) is a celebration of all the things we keep coming back to as a theatre company: the artists, the stories, and the community that keeps our garden flowering, year after year. Every theatre company has a cycle, and ours has seen growth in all directions, artistically and operationally. That growth is in large part thanks to supporters like you who tip the watering can when it matters most.

With the proceeds raised at PERENNIAL, we aim to bolster our efforts as a company that produces affordable, original works. Our eighth season comes with an addition of three more original works to The Impostors canon, dozens of opportunities for Chicagoan artists, and a curation of audience experiences that are certain to leave a lasting impression.

This year’s goals reflect our progress into Year Eight of operations.

* Tier 1: $13,000 (Sprout)
* Tier 2: $14,000 (Bud)
* Tier 3: $15,000 (Bloom)

These goals are not arbitrarily set. We fundraise in order to continue:

* Steadily increasing artist stipends by 5-10% (since 2022!)
* Offering affordability to theatergoers on a budget
* Fostering our partnerships with The Den Theatre and other Chicagoland organizations and institutions.
* Producing even more ambitious works that challenge our audiences and ourselves.

No gift is too small, and every dollar you contribute will plant the seeds towards future seasons and stories.

If attending PERENNIAL in person is not an option, we hope that you’ll consider pledging your support to our online campaign. You may follow the LINK BELOW to make your contribution or hop over to our Facebook event page for more information.

In times of shade and sunlight, thank you for embracing the art of pretend with us!

Sincerely,
The Impostors

Join us for a celebratory evening of giving in support of season eight at—Perennial.

For seven seasons, The Impostors Theatre Co. has cultivated a mission to stage stories at the crossroads of retrospect and innovation, where the fantastic collides with the everyday. Over those seven seasons, we have produced twenty entirely original works, making our commitment to new material a cornerstone of the ensemble’s vision. In these stories, we examine the narratives we construct and those that emerge unexpectedly; the tension between control and surrender; the ways memory and time reshape identity; and the increasingly blurred boundary between reality and fantasy.

Fascinated by the people who carry our stories when we no longer can—and by the courage it takes to entrust those stories to others—The Impostors can’t wait to dig into the weeds and tend to the ever-growing art of pretend.

For the 2026-2027 season, The Impostors will explore the idea of Impressionism—not simply as an artistic movement, but as a way of understanding how we experience the world. Impressionism is concerned with emotional truth: the feeling an image, memory, or moment evokes rather than an objective record of reality.

✌️💥⁉️
We’ve conducted this “grand experiment” for seven seasons now. We’ve met and collaborated with some of Chicago’s finest artists, and for this volume, we reunite with a few Footholds alumni.

You’ve seen these brilliant performers step into roles like a lovestruck Lincoln impersonator, a pigeon contemplating its place in the big city, and a trolley mechanic having a full-blown existential breakdown about the state of the world (honestly, a normal Tuesday if you ask me).

What roles will they bring to life this year? Find out. FOOTHOLDS VOL. 7 opens in less than a month—tickets available soon.

Our treasured anthology series returns for its seventh installment in one month’s time!

Each year, we challenge writers to submit a short play for us to produce. By introducing a single, ambiguous constraint–a thread that runs through each accepted piece–we ask our writers and collaborators to start with the same limitation and branch off wherever their imaginations take them.

Our past volumes have showcased versatile properties and various locations rife with possibility. Each collection has celebrated the spectrum of dramatic storytelling, from satire to horror to romance to movement pieces. The cross-collaboration of multiple playwrights, directors, designers, and performers alike elevate this “grand experiment” to a true testament of creative community building.

This year’s foothold: A narrow, weathered bridge (not safe for driving) where visitors must pay tolls–symbolic or literal–for passage. Engraving its aged wood are initials and messages, evidence of visitors past.

“BEWARE! TROLLS! (AND THEIR REMARKABLE EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE)”
by Annika Andersson
directed by Kayla Higbee

“BURN THAT BRIDGE WHEN WE GET TO IT”
by Greta Mae Geiser
directed by Rashaad A. Bond

“HALBERDIERS”
by Alex Fortune
directed by Tim McCarthy

“IF TRUE, FALSE”
by MD Frank
directed by Rachel Borgo

“I WAS ADAPTED FROM A SHAKESPEARE PLAY AND ALL I GOT WAS MY SOUL STOLEN BY A LOUSY MAGIC BRIDGE”
by Matt Schutz
directed by Stephanie Lewis

“THIS BRIDGE kills PEOPLE”
by Cody Lee Walker
directed by McManus
