GOODBYE, DRAGON INN
It's the last day at the Fu He Grand movie theater in Taipei, and the film Dragon Inn is playing to a nearly empty room. The ticket attendant can't find the projectionist, the gay patron attempting to cruise has little luck, and the aged stars of the original film watch their former selves on the big screen tearfully. It would be a completely unremarkable day, except for the unassuming finality that makes each ordinary moment bittersweet. A love letter to the impermanence of the spaces that exhibit films that feel eternal. Part of our series Movies about Movies. One way that corporate America has ruined movie theaters is that they have trained people to think there will be 20-40 minutes of trailers (interspersed with car commercials) before the feature. Here, trailers start at the published showtime, and the feature starts about 10 minutes later. So if you come here 15 minutes after showtime thinking we're probably in the middle of our eighth ad for SUVs, you will be disappointed. We are not sorry.
