Lillstreet Photography Department We offer multilevel classes in digital photography, photographic software, and host programming/events on contemporary practice.

Striving to grow the Chicago photographic community, Lillstreet's photography program offers artist-taught classes that cover everything from technical instruction to advanced conceptual and artistic ideas. We engage with the conversations surrounding contemporary photography and facilitate students' critical thinking skills when it comes to reading the photograph. We're here to help you master th

✨STARTING SATURDAY APRIL 10! Round two of our beloved 👟👟Walking as Photographic Practice is here! Explore new locations and advanced approaches to making photos in this follow-up course about the storied relationship between walking and photography. The act of walking provides time for reflection, meditation, and observation. During this time, there is great potential in documenting the world around us, both for posterity and for a way to creatively process changes to our environment. Online classes will provide engaging prompts, along with discussion and group feedback. Throughout this 10-week course, the instructor will provide opportunities for outdoor photo walk meetups as a group. All photographic devices are welcome, from cell phones to analog cameras, and don’t worry if you haven’t taken the first class, these lessons are adaptable to any skill level! Writing Through the Lens starts Sunday, April 11, 10am-12pm. Curious how your love of photography and your love of writing can complement one another? This class will introduce you to the unique and multifaceted relationship between these two mediums of imagination. Along with engaging class discussions and group feedback, you will use your own photographs and those of your classmates as springboards to create your own unique stories in the three main genres of short fiction, poetry, and drama, and to explore the relationship between these two forms of creative self-expression.

We have two online sections of First-Time Photo Editing starting next week! This chilly weather is the perfect time to sharpen up your computer skills. What do we do with our digital images once they’re shot? This introductory class will guide you through the basics of digital workflow, file organization, and image enhancements using various editing tools across Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. Learn the strengths and weaknesses of these two programs and how you can effectively integrate them to meet all your photo editing needs. Documentary Photo is back! Starting next Tuesday 2/16 6:30-8:30pm — throughout the last year, students in this class have made some truly incredible work observing how their environments have shifted during the pandemic. This class will introduce you to the historically rich genre of documentary photography. In addition to investigating the roles of truth and narrative in visual storytelling, thoughtful assignments and lectures will cover a wide breadth of approaches to photographing various topics including artist/subject rapport, access, and collaboration. If you’ve taken our Websites for Artists class in the past, this is a perfect follow up, and even if you haven’t this class can provide you with a good guide moving forward. In the photography department, our teachers are interfacing with digital technology all the time and often become quite savvy at navigating various internet platforms for promoting their work. This class is open to all artists working in any medium! Discover marketing strategies to help your work stand out in today’s competitive market. Learn how to identify your target audience, make connections, and create a seamless buyer’s journey for that audience. Your instructor will provide an overview of how to create a marketing strategy for your unique artist brand by covering topics such as brand and artist identity, improving your website SEO, and how to write about your art.
