In the new play development process, Mike creates a collaborative space in which he works with actors while he is writing a play. This allows characters and stories to evolve out of a few initial scripted scenes or the exploration of a germ idea. Cold reading of scripts in process alternates with informal discussion and feedback, which further inspires his writing. Mike's goals are to create as se

amless a script as possible as well as to explore ways to combine comedy and drama, pathos and humor. Another goal is for each character to have his or her own arc and at least one chance to say fully what they are all about. A variety of subject matter, styles, as well as time periods are explored in this way. Thanks to our collaboration with Dancing On The Spot, we have also been exploring ways to bring movement into staging. Starting in 2020, On The Spot created a YouTube channel with new full length plays and many short pieces created and filmed on Zoom. It also includes an archive of filmed past stage productions. In Chicago, On the Spot productions have been seen at: Gorilla Tango, LaCosta Theater, New Rock Theater, Raven, Rivendell, City Lit, Berger Park Coach House, and the Greenhouse Theater Center as well as in several festivals around town. On the Spot intends to continue to expand the ensemble and develop new plays well into the future.

Women often find ways to care for others, and to express their deepest hopes, thoughts, and emotions through fiber arts. This production is inspired by such women, contemporary and drawn from mythology. Women use their hands and their hearts to weave, knit, crochet, and embroider, turning disparate threads into something healing, comforting, and whole. In this show, we intertwine poetry and improvisational dance to create a unique textile of movement.

Pat Henderson a longtime collaborator of On The Spot, has asked us to share her audition notice, she is a fabulous director (and lighting designer).

Bullets, Nickels, Dimes and Life by Jeremy Kehoe
Sassy Pat Productions (Pat Henderson) is seeking performers for this new work that raises awareness that members of the homeless community are humans seeking hope and a better life. Five homeless people find themselves “doing time” – serving their bullet, nickel, dime, and life sentences not behind bars but out in the bright sunlight – while attempting to survive their new reality and maintain their individual and collective humanity in the midst of their open-air prison
The production will run at the Habitat for Humanity on South Grove in Elgin on Saturday and Sunday Oct 10th and 11th. October 10th is world homeless day. Any additional proceeds will be donated to PADS. The final dress rehearsal on Friday Oct 9th will benefit PADS homeless shelter.
