"My favorite memory from my time with Women's Ensemble was singing Ararım with the Middle East Music Ensemble my first year of college. It was such a fun song and fun group to sing with, and there were so many encores. MEME performs with instruments and no one is afraid to move and dance around on stage, so that was a fun night.

Women's Ensemble is the perfect break from the constant workload that comes with being a student at UChicago. Women's Ensemble is also especially fun under Mollie's direction because we learn so many songs in different languages, from different cultures, and eras. Somehow I'm able to sing in Armenian, Ukrainian, and Xhosa without it feeling like a language class because Mollie makes it so easy."

"My favorite memory has to be performing Bach's St. John Passion during the mother of all storms, but performing the Messiah was pretty close.

You should consider joining Motet if you love a challenge. It's difficult music to master, and you should probably put in practice time outside of rehearsal, but it's so rewarding to perform after all that process. The feeling of pride and collective joy that comes from singing with such a fantastic group of people is euphoric."

Congratulations to Motet Choir alto Genevieve Evans, who graduated with a B.A. in creative writing! Next year, she is pursuing a 4+1 master's in management at the Booth School of Business.

"My favorite memory from Women's Ensemble is probably when I rehearsed in Rockefeller for the first time. It is so visually beautiful and the acoustics are wonderful; it is such a privilege to practice in that building!

I encourage incoming students (as well as current students and community members!) to consider joining Women's Ensemble because it is a very grounding part of one's routine to attend weekly rehearsals, especially when you are used to singing at home and still adjusting to college life."

"My favorite piece that we performed in Women's Ensemble is Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin. The song was my own arrangement, and it had a lot of sentimental value for me and my family.

Women's Ensemble is such a warm and welcoming space for people who love to make music. I love that we also get to explore so many cultures, represented by visiting artists and also singers within the ensemble. "

"My favorite memory with the Wind Ensemble is going bowling with the group and learning that Professor Carlson’s career prospects included professional bowler in addition to Wind Ensemble conductor. My favorite pieces we played were Arturo Marquez's Danzon No. 2 and John Mackey's Aurora Awakens.

I think any student should consider joining the Wind Ensemble because it’s an opportunity to join a really fun group of people and perform great music, and it’s a great escape from studying."

"My favorite memory in Jazz Ensemble is getting to work with Patricia Brennan on her original pieces. Her passion is infectious and it was very fun getting to craft the vocal line in live time.

Jazz Ensemble was so great at helping me become a better improviser, a more rounded musician, and introduced me to so many talented musicians at UChicago and in the Chicago area."
