[What is Eardrum?]
BMC’s Eardrum series focuses on bringing improvised music to the south side. The series aims to feature diverse artists and types of improvisation and to celebrate Chicago’s rich culture of creative and experimental scenes.
About Mai Sugimoto: Mai Sugimoto is a saxophonist, composer, educator, and active member of Chicago's jazz and creative music scene.
Set 1: Peter Maunu/Carol Genetti
Carol Genetti and Peter Maunu first met and played together over a decade ago and have continued to perform as a duo. Their music might best be described as genre bending, stream of consciousness, improvised spontaneous composition. Drawing on elements from the second Viennese School is as natural and organic as a contrasting modal, folk inspired melody, albeit with a deranged noise accompaniment. Carol Genetti’s haunting voice deconstructed by her electronics plus Peter Maunu’s various electronically processed stringed instruments result in a cinematic soundscape from an alternate universe.
Set 2: Giallorenzo/Acevedo/Damon
This collective trio, often performing as a quartet with a rotating reedist, brings together the unique voices of Paul Giallorenzo (piano), Ausberto Acevedo (bass), and Tyler Damon (drums), whose diverse backgrounds and creative energy promise to create a vibrant and dynamic collaboration. Drawing inspiration from both tradition and modernity, this group promises to create a sound that is full of surprises and spontaneous innovation.
