Our vision is a world thriving with aquatic life—from rockhoppers like Wellington the famous penguin to reef fish and more—sustained by people who love, understand and protect it. We've been sparking compassion, curiosity and conservation for the aquatic animal world since 1930. Every day, guests come eye-to-eye with bluegills and belugas, stingrays and sturgeons, sea stars and sea otters and much

more to discover their inner aquatic biologist or underwater explorer—whether that's at Shedd or while visiting us digitally. Our work—animal care, conservation research and educational opportunities for learners of all ages—doesn't stop at our walls. It encompasses the Great Lakes and extends to endangered aquatic animals and ecosystems around the world. Through guests at Shedd, virtual learnings programs, or through local habitat restoration sites locally, we welcome everyone to become a citizen scientist and to take action for animals.

As we honor the mothers and maternal figures in our lives this weekend, we can't forget to celebrate maternal care in the aquatic world, too! 🩵

Rescued southern sea otter Jade is part of a special program led by Monterey Bay Aquarium to strengthen the numbers of wild sea otter populations for generations to come.

Our Animal Care team has been hard at work to teach Jade the essential survival skills that help otters thrive.

One day, she might do the same for rescued otter pups that could be released back into the wild, helping to ensure a thriving future for her species!🦦

Can sea otters teach other sea otters how to survive in the wild? 🦦

After being rescued by experts from Monterey Bay Aquariumum and spending two years at Aquarium of the Pacific, Jade arrived at Shedd a year ago and has quickly become a source of hope for guests and staff alike.

Every otter in the raft at Shedd acts as an ambassador to their species, reminding millions of guests of how important it is to care and advocate for endangered species.

Jade, however, is on a unique path — one day, she might become a surrogate mother for rescued pups like herself that could be released into the wild, helping to bolster her species!

The best way to celebrate spring?

Fighting to protect local wildlife for generations to come.🌿💪

About 22 million pounds of plastic, most of which comes from single-use foam ware, ends up in the Great Lakes every year.

We have the chance to ban these pollutants in our state once and for all — but we need your help!

This spring, a bill is heading to the Illinois House that would phase foam foodware out of our state by 2030. Together, we can get this important bill to the finish line.
