A well a bird, bird, bird, the bird is the word this week at Lincoln Park Zoo 🎶 🐦
In honor of fall migration season, we’re spreading our wings for Bird Week at the zoo!
One of the leading human-caused threats to birds is collisions with glass. In the U.S., these collisions kill more than 1 billion birds each year, and a 2019 study identified Chicago as one of the most dangerous cities for bird-glass collisions. The good news? Buildings can be made safer for birds! Bird-friendly designs and deterrents can significantly reduce collisions, and there are simple ways we can all help migrating birds safely navigate our city. Lincoln Park Zoo is proud to support a proposed municipal code amendment that would formally establish requirements for bird-friendly building design. This Chicago amendment would ensure that all glass and other transparent or reflective surfaces on applicable building projects are designed, treated, constructed, or installed to deter bird collisions, based on criteria established by the American Bird Conservancy.
